Getting Android Studio to work on Ubuntu 14.04

This pertains to Android Studio build AI-135.1538390 (at least).

The SDK Manager | Android Developers was not included in the install, but gets downloaded and installed when you create a new project.

If you simply start by importing a project, as I did, the SDK Manager does not get installed, and there will be no Android menu item under the Tools menu. So start with a new project, even if you do not intend to create one.
