The secret files had been buried since the fall of communism and only recently opened to the public. Now a growing tide of ordinary Romanians is plunging into the past to find out what neighbors, friends and even family were whispering about them to authorities. The release of the files has reopened old wounds and raised wrenching moral questions: Do Romanians really want to expose their spouses and children to rumors fed to the authorities over a lifetime? Is the information in the files reliable? And if so, is learning the truth about those one trusted most worth the anguish that can result? Revelations have already been tearing families apart and destroying friendships, a measure of the trauma in store for the nation as the 1.3 million Securitate files become public. Other former Soviet states released their own secret police files years ago.
