Doug Speight of the N.C. A&T Office of Outreach and Technology Transfer said food companies are showing a strong interest in licensing the process, which does not degrade the taste or quality of treated peanuts, and might even render them easier to process for use as a food ingredient.

Immunoassays showed 100 percent inactivation of peanut allergens in whole roasted kernels, and the processed peanuts showed no reaction in tests on human serums from severely allergic individuals. The inventor, Dr. Mohamed Ahmedna, is optimizing the process further to remove allergens from other foods.

"We are extremely pleased that we were able to find such a simple solution to a vexing problem that has enormous economic and public health ramifications, both for peanut sensitive individuals, and the food industry as a whole," said Ahmedna, associate professor of food science in N.C. A&T's School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences.

Peanut and tree nut allergies are the most severe of all food allergies, affecting approximately 3 million Americans, and causing 100 - 150 deaths from anaphylactic shock annually and many more hospitalizations. In industrialized nations, the allergy has been rapidly increasing in children, for causes that are not entirely understood. One study showed that between 1997 and 2002, peanut allergies in children doubled in the United States. Today, an estimated one percent of all children suffer from the allergy.

The process works like this: the team disperses graphene oxide particles in specially treated water and then draws the mixture through a filter membrane. The water somehow causes the particles to bind into a paperlike layer on the filter's surface, the researcher reports in tomorrow's Nature. "We actually don't know all of the details of how the layering takes place," says physical chemist and co-author Rod Ruoff. Laboratory tests showed that the grapheme paper was as strong as that made from carbon nanotubes, yet unlike nanotubes, the material can be fabricated to any size. That makes graphene paper a prime candidate for a new generation of superstrong composite materials, Ruoff says.

I Svenska Dagbladet kan man läsa om det hemska i att äta kött. Man är en riktig miljöbov. Och Livsmedelsverket tänker lägga om kostråd så att de tar hänsyn till koldioxidutsläpp. Vilket bullshit!

Varför är det bullshit? Jo, som Mikael Ståldal skrivit om många gånger, så ska man hantera sådana här miljöproblem genom att internalisera de externa kostnaderna. Detta innebär i klartext, att om kötttillverkning har stor miljöpåverkan så ser man till så att kostnaden för miljön tas ut i priset på köttet, genom att man beskattar den koldioxidutsläppande energi som gått åt för att göra köttet. Köttet blir då dyrt. Det är då inte fel att äta kött. I alla fall inte av miljöskäl. Jag vill ha signal om vad som är nyttigt för mig av Livsmedelsverket och signal om miljöpåverkan genom priset.

Men det som Svenskan okritiskt enligt mitt förmenade skriver om, och det som Livsmedelsverket tänker göra, det är att detaljstyra människors liv, denna gång i den heliga koldioxidens namn. Man vill helt enkelt likrikta människors beteende, och har hittat miljön som det skäl man ska använda för att nå detta.

Missförstå mig rätt, jag menar inte att man ska låta bli att ta hänsyn till miljön, men man ska göra det på ett sådant sätt att alternativen fortfarande finns kvar, men att de bär sina kostnader.

Att släppa ut koldioxid på vissa specifika sätt verkar snart ta plats bland dödssynderna.

Att äta ett kilo nötkött är lika skadligt för miljön som att köra bil i tre timmar och lämna alla lampor i hemmet på under tiden. Det visar en ny studie. Samtidigt ökar svenskarnas köttätande kraftigt. På grund av miljöaspekten ska nu Livsmedelsverket förändra kostråden.

Och vad gäller kvinnoförnedrande texter, som ärbdet Cameron skjuter in sig på, så tror jag att skälet till att de blivit så populära bland ungdomar beror på skolsystemen. I Dagens DN kan man läsa om att hotellkedjan Clarion tagit ett initiativ att hjälpa kvinnor som är utsatta för våld i hemmet, genom att ge dem möjlighet till ett boende skilt från våldsverkaren. Det är ett lovvärt initiativ. Men i DN-artikeln skjuter man stenhårt in sig på att hotellkedjan visar porr på betalkanaler som del av sitt utbud på sina hotell.

• I så fall ska man ju förbjuda våldsfilmer, inte porrfilmer! TV-utbudet är fullt av våld, till viss del tror jag beroende på en puritansk tradition från USA där att väcka starka känslor med våld är OK, men inte erotik. Vi får s a s våld istället för "porr"på TV:n. Det är ju bara att tänka efter: Vill man att ett barn hellre av misstag, i verkligheten ska bevittna ett mord eller ett samlag? Valet är ganska enkelt.

• Man måste rimligen släppa porrspåret helt och då istället fundera på om alla filmer med några inslag av våld ska förbjudas. Man måste då skilja på skildring (av våld i detta fallet) och utövande av det. I så fall ska vi ju förbjuda en massa skildringar av allt möjligt som man inte vill att folk ska göra i verkligheten. Bibeln ligger illa till... Man måste dock kunna få tala om, kommunicera och skildra saker! Det är grundläggande yttrandefrihet. Och att hindra denna under hotellvistelser verkar mer än lovligt konstigt.
