I Sydsvenskan kan man läsa följande apropå en teaterföreställning i Malmö:

Innan mentalsjukhusens tid kunde dårar och kriminella skickas iväg för att segla på haven i åratal. Ett sådant fartyg skildras i Sebastian Brants roman ”Dårarnas skepp” från 1458. När den amerikanska konstnären och sångerskan Danielle de Picciotto kom över boken för ett par år sedan blev hon förtjust. – Romanen är en fantastisk mix av filosofi, satir, mysticism, kabbala, tarot ... Allt som intresserar mig, säger hon på högtalartelefon från hemmet i Berlin.

Det här lät ju intressant. Jag hade ingen aning om att det fanns en sed att skicka ut dårar och kriminella på haven, och jag hade inte hört talas om en bok som skildrar denna sed tidigare.

Så jag gick till Wikipedia, och enligt den så är boken ingen roman, utan en satir. Och den handlar inte om dårar, utan om kyrkan, en lek med ordet "navis":

The Ship of Fools was inspired by a frequent motif in medieval art and Literature, and particularly in religious satire, due to a pun on the Latin word "navis", which means a boat and also the Nave of a Church.

Enligt Wikipedia så är boken en kritik av kyrkan, vilket i och för sig inte motsägs av de Picciotto. Men artikeln i Sydsvenskan nämner inte detta, vilket ju rimligen måste vara centralt, och något dokument över verklig galenskap på fjortonhundratalet verkar boken inte vara.

Undrar om boken finns att hitta på nätet? Jo, det gör den i engelsk översättning i projekt Gutenberg. Ur det moderna förordet:

Serietecknaren Scott Adams som gör serien Dilbert har lagt ut rejält med pengar för att göra en stor undersökning om vad 500 ekonomer tycker om  de två presidentkandidaternas ekonomiska politik. De rankar också vilka frågor de tycker är viktiga. Ekonomerna rapporterar också om de är republikaner, demokrater, libertarianer eller "oberoende". De flesta är demokrater och de flesta förordar Obama. De saker de tycker är viktigast för USA nu är i fallande ordning:

1. Utbildning
2. Vård och omsorg
3. Frihandel
4. Energifrågor

Vård-skola-omsorg med andra ord.

I Nederländerna präglas varje år 5 euro-mynt med ett speciellt motiv. I år så utlystes en tävling som vanns av programmeraren och designern Stani Michiels, vilket uppmärksammas av bloggaren och pythonprogrammeraren Reinout van Rees. På ena sidan på myntet så visas namnen på berömda holländska arkitekter i en spiralform, där positionen i spiralen och storleken på namnet bestäms av hur många hits på Internet arkitekten har. Detta visade sig vara en närmast exponentiell funktion (vilket vanns av arkitekten Rem Koolhas), vilket passade bra med spiralen. Typsnittets vikt varieras i spiralen så att drottningens ansikte framstår:

På baksidan syns en karta över Nederländerna, definierad av böcker. Fåglarna över landet representerar städerna och fåglarnas storlek deras respektive folkmängd.

Beräkningarna för att skapa spiralen, böckerna, kartan och de andra grafiska effekterna gjordes i programspråket python.

Craig Jordan, a biologist at the University of Rochester Medical Centre, in New York state, is one such. He has discovered that a chemical called parthenolide, found in feverfew, a medicinal plant, kills AML stem cells. Normal stem cells, however, seem to be able to tolerate the drug without difficulty. Stephen Hawking säger i en artikel i Newsweek att det inte är någon fara att den nya partikelacceleratorn i CERN - Large Hadron collider - kommer att skapa något farligt. Om den skapar något så görs det redan naturligt.

And it is absolutely safe. There has been a scare story that it might create a tiny black hole that would swallow up the Earth. But if the collisions in the LHC produced a micro black hole, and this is unlikely, it would just evaporate away again, producing a characteristic pattern of particles. Collisions at these and greater energies occur millions of times a day in the Earth's atmosphere, and nothing terrible happens. The world will not come to an end when the LHC turns on. The LHC is feeble compared with what goes on in the universe. If a disaster was going to happen, it would have happened already.

Detta hade jag ingen aning om. Man har ju en tendens att jämför bensin- och dieselbilar på hur många liter/mil de dricker (eller liter/100km om man vill vara mer EU-inriktad). Men, diesel är tyngre än bensin och innehåller mer energi per liter. Detta gör att mängden koldioxid från en liter diesel är 15% större än från en bensinbil.

The problem, according to the report, is that even though diesels use 20 to 25 percent less fuel, they emit 15 percent more carbon dioxide per liter of fuel burned than gasoline-fueled cars.

Jag är väl ingen expert på sådant här men man kan ju notera att de väljer att göra detta på en söndag när marknaderna är stängda.
