Lennart Regebro skriver om ideologier och identitet på sin blogg. I går kom jag i diskussion med Micke om detta och jag föreslog att identitet är viktig eftersom det är lättare att fatta beslut om man vet (eller tror sig veta) vem man är. Men Micke föreslog en bättre förklaring: Att det har med grupptillhörighet att göra. Och då klarnar det:

Människan mår ofta väldigt dåligt av att bli utfryst eller utesluten ur en grupp. Anledning till att människan mår så dåligt av det, är nog att under stor del av människans tid här på jorden så har man tillhört en nomadisk grupp, utan vilken man inte kunnat överleva.

Att bli utesluten ur en grupp innebär därför att människans överlevnadsinstinkter kickar in och ställer till med starka känslor som säger "Det här är förbannat allvarligt, agera!" till resten av hjärnan.

Identitet då? Identitet kan ses som ett sätt att förhandla sig fram till medlemskap i en grupp. "Jag är också från Osby", "Jag har samma intresse", osv. Identitet blir alltså en förutsättning för att kunna skapa tillräckligt starka band för en grupp. Man kan också bli en ledare för en grupp om man har en identitet.

I en artikel i Svenska Dagbladet skrivs det om vattenåtgång, och hur vegetarianism kan minska vattenåtgången för en person. Man har också en karta där man kan se vattenförbrukningen per person i olika länder.  Man kan lätt tro att det vatten vi använder, tar vi från en fattig i Bangladesh. Så är inte fallet.

Vi lever i ett land med tusentals sjöar och tillräcklig nederbörd. Vi har så mycket vatten (och fallhöjd) att vi genererar elektricitet från den. Det är svårt att skeppa vatten från Sverige till exempel Bangladesh (även om det är möjligt).

Vad gäller resursanvändning, är svaret som vanligt inte att försöka bestämma eller påverka människors livsstil. Istället ska man internalisera externa kostnader, vilket i klartext innebär att man betalar för det vatten man vill ha, till ett pris som gör att man inte förstör miljön, därför att pengarna räcker för att parera eventuella skadeverkningar av mycket vattenanvändande. På så sätt kan de som har en vattenkrävande livsstil fortsätta att ha det.

Den person artikeln handlar om är nog inne på samma spår, för han förespråkar ekonomisk tillväxt.

Ditt morgonkaffe kräver 140 liter vatten. Och till ett kilo biff på grillen har det gått åt 15 500 liter. "Virtuellt vatten" är ett sätt att visa att vi konsumerar mycket mer vatten än det vi dricker och använder i hushållet.

Intelligenta fågelarter, som kan ändra sitt beteende efter omgivningen, förändras också fortare genetiskt (för att matcha det nya beteendet). Man skulle kunna säga att intelligens är ett selektionstryck i sig.

Hjärnan säger "imagine the possibilities!" och generna säger "yeah, yeah, we'll get there".

Nu finns praktiskt taget inga georgier kvar i Sydossetien. Uppgifter om att de georgiska byarna står tomma har under veckan kommit från georgiska regeringskällor, och nu bekräftas detta också av Sydossetiens president Eduard Kokoity. Enligt georgiska källor flydde de georgiska invånarna undan sydossetiska irreguljära trupper, enligt Kokoity evakuerades de när den georgiska sidan planerade sitt anfall. Om det ändå fanns civilbefolkning kvar "skapade man en korridor för dem", säger Kokoity. Alltså medger han etnisk rensning.

When moving my Orange Internet Everywhere subscription over to Linux, I could not find a good source for what  APN (Access Point Node) to use. I have now found one. It is here. It also contains  other information on GPRS/Mobile internet settings. It covers O2, Orange, Vodafone, T-Mobile, 3, Tesco-Mobile and Virgin Mobile.

Summary: Use this guide, and use "orangeinternet"  "internetvpn" as APN.

A couple of months ago I purchased an Orange Internet Everywhere subscription with an Option modem. I have been using it with Windows XP but problems have been mounting more and more with flaky connections and non-working drivers according to the Windows Browser. These problems are solved with a restart, but the problem resurfaces again within 5hours to 10 minutes of running. I believe this may be caused by a decomposing XP installation, but there is really no way to know. Since my laptop is dual boot I really would prefer to use Linux where it is easier to see and trouble shoot, not to mention reinstall. My laptop came without XP CDs, with the OS preinstalled.

Besides, my work makes it easier for me to use Linux than Windows, since the tools I use work better on Linux. When I got Internet Everywhere in late May, the guide I found for Linux was this French one. I never managed to get out on the Internet with it and gave up after a number of attempts and hours of trying.

Since the situation with my XP is getting grave, I decided yesterday to scour the Internet again and found this guide at pharscape. It uses a newer Interface to the Option modem. I followed the guide and everything worked with these cautions:.

• Be careful to not have spaces in your directory names when doing the install. "make" will fail.
• Use "orangeinternet" "internetvpn" as APN in the HSOConnect preferences. "internet" did not work for me
• Coming from CentOS I wasn't sure first on how to install the .deb packages. The syntax is "sudo dpkg -i filename.deb"

I am writing this blog post on the HSO connection :-)

I am not sure if it supports the 7.2 Mb/s speed on Linux.

I think I do get good connection speeds because HSOConnect says "UMTS" in the screen shot. However I am blocked from lots of web sites by some kind of filter at Orange:

"Orange Safeguard has classified this page as only suitable for people over the age of 18. You currently have Orange Safeguard turned on. If you wish to turn this off then please call Orange customer services by dialling 150 on your Orange phone..."

Apparently Ubuntu support forum pages are not suitable for young eyes.

My guess is that the APN I have chosen is different from the one I use on Windows, because I do not get these blocks when using the service there. However it seems impossible to figure out what that APN name would be. I have called the 07973 100 150 number with Orange but all paths in their voice computer system leads to a "Sorry we cannot take your call" (or similar). Maybe their system is down. I cannot cal just "150" as the blocked page message says, for the obvious reason that I am using an Orange Internet modem, not a phone.

The connection is now flaky on Linux as well. However it doesn't crash the drivers or make a hard reboot necessary, so I've got that going for me which is nice. The flakiness therefore must lie outside of the computer, either in the modem, the base station, or in temperamental coverage of central London.

Update 2008-08-15

The connection went back to stable again, and everything works fine. I got rid of the Safeguard block by strolling down to my local Orange shop and called from there. There seems to be a timeout on http connections, but I have solved that by tunneling those requests. I cannot for some reason connect to Google Talk, but ssh works well; Google Talk worked on XP. I wonder what the difference is...

Detta är preliminära slutsatser från en liten undersökning som gjorts vid universitetet i Liverpool. Man har tetstat 100 kvinnor mot lukten av 97 män, jämfört deras immunförsvar och den preferens respektive kvinna gav och om hon åt p-piller eller inte. De som åt p-piller valde anorlunda.

Researchers asked 100 women to sniff six male body odour samples from 97 volunteers and say which they preferred, with tests carried out both before and after the women had started taking the pill. "The results showed that the preferences of women who began using the contraceptive pill shifted towards men with genetically similar odours," the University of Liverpool's Dr Craig Roberts, who led the study, said.

Pacemakern sattes in i folk mellan 1990-2002. Det är troligt att andra pacemakers har liknande svagheter. Pacemakertillverkare har inte velat hjälpa teamet med information, och jag förstår tillverkarna.

Men faktum kvarstår: Allt kan hackas, med nog med kunskap och/eller uteffekt.

Om man vill ha flera rader med flikar i Firefox 3 så stöter man på ett problem, och det är att det gamla tilllägget Tab Mix Plus som ordnade till detta, inte fungerar längre, och någon ny beta-version av den har inte släppts i år.

Det kan också vara så illa att det gäller andra mentalsjukdomar med en genetisk komponent. Varför är det illa? Jo, om det fanns ett sätt som det gick fel på så vore det lättare att hitta ett motmedel. Nu verkar det som om selektionstrycket snabbt tar bort genetiska fel som ger schizofreni ur populationen, men att nya fel dyker upp, som ger samma symtom.

“We’ve looked for common variants in schizophrenia and get almost nothing,” said Dr. David Goldstein, a geneticist at Duke University and one of Dr. Stefansson’s co-authors. “This means natural selection has done a really good job of purging them away, and we’re left with rare variants, a constant flow of them, as the principal driver of the disease.”
