But the sewage samples obtained from Mogden and Beckton plants indicated that the actual figures for cocaine abuse were far higher. Tests found that 37,638 doses of cocaine, or 150,552 lines, are consumed in London every day, nearly 16 times more than the government figure of 2,397 doses.

Recently I gave a talk in which I explored the idea of a hosted lifebits service. I think it’ll turn out to be fundamental principle and an enabler of many things, including the social network portability that is the blogosphere’s topic du jour. But before we go there, let’s explore how a series of more basic scenarios might play out in the context of a hosted lifebits service.

Researchers in the Department of Neuroscience at Mount Sinai School of Medicine have identified taste receptors in the human intestines. The taste receptor T1R3 and the taste G protein gustducin are critical to sweet taste in the tongue. Research now shows these two sweet-sensing proteins are also expressed in specialized taste cells of the gut where they sense glucose within the intestine.

published Aug 21, 2007 11:41   by admin ( last modified Aug 21, 2007 11:41 )

Aims to make Plone more efficient to work with. This release adds versioning, locking, inline editing and validation, link integrity, intranet/extranet workflows, wiki support, OpenID support, and full-text indexing of Word/PDF. (If you're not using the installers, please note that this release requires Zope 2.10.4 and Python 2.4.4 — earlier versions will not work)

"Riktiga" mail hamnar i spammen

published Aug 21, 2007 04:48   by admin ( last modified Aug 21, 2007 04:48 )

We are almost there! I just tagged Plone 3.0. Over the next couple of days we will be making the installers and preparing the press materials so we can do the proper release on Tuesday.

published Aug 17, 2007 12:59   by admin ( last modified Aug 17, 2007 12:59 )

published Aug 17, 2007 03:55   by admin ( last modified Aug 17, 2007 03:55 )

published Aug 17, 2007 03:46   by admin ( last modified Aug 17, 2007 03:46 )
The secret files had been buried since the fall of communism and only recently opened to the public. Now a growing tide of ordinary Romanians is plunging into the past to find out what neighbors, friends and even family were whispering about them to authorities. The release of the files has reopened old wounds and raised wrenching moral questions: Do Romanians really want to expose their spouses and children to rumors fed to the authorities over a lifetime? Is the information in the files reliable? And if so, is learning the truth about those one trusted most worth the anguish that can result? Revelations have already been tearing families apart and destroying friendships, a measure of the trauma in store for the nation as the 1.3 million Securitate files become public. Other former Soviet states released their own secret police files years ago.

Länk - Artificiell gravitation

published Aug 17, 2007 03:45   by admin ( last modified Aug 17, 2007 03:45 )
It demonstrates that a superconductive gyroscope is capable of generating a powerful gravitomagnetic field, and is therefore the gravitational counterpart of the magnetic coil. Depending on further confirmation, this effect could form the basis for a new technological domain, which would have numerous applications in space and other high-tech sectors" says de Matos. Although just 100 millionths of the acceleration due to the Earth’s gravitational field, the measured field is a surprising one hundred million trillion times larger than Einstein’s General Relativity predicts. Initially, the researchers were reluctant to believe their own results.

Human Rights Watch: Hemsk behandling av gästarbetare i Saudi

published Aug 17, 2007 03:41   by admin ( last modified Aug 17, 2007 03:41 )
In 1962, then-King Faisal abolished slavery in Saudi Arabia by royal decree. Over forty years later, migrant workers in the purportedly modern society that the kingdom has become continue to suffer extreme forms of labor exploitation that sometimes rise to slavery-like conditions. Their lives are further complicated by deeply rooted gender, religious, and racial discrimination. This provides the foundation for prejudicial public policy and government regulations, shameful practices of private employers, and unfair legal proceedings that yield judicial sentences of the death penalty. The overwhelming majority of the men and women who face these realities in Saudi Arabia are low-paid workers from Asia, Africa, and countries in the Middle East. This report gives voice to some of their stories.

Inorganiskt liv i yttre rymden? Plasmaspiraler med DNA-egenskaper

published Aug 16, 2007 01:53   by admin ( last modified Aug 16, 2007 01:53 )

Quite bizarrely, not only do these helical strands interact in a counterintuitive way in which like can attract like, but they also undergo changes that are normally associated with biological molecules, such as DNA and proteins, say the researchers. They can, for instance, divide, or bifurcate, to form two copies of the original structure. These new structures can also interact to induce changes in their neighbours and they can even evolve into yet more structures as less stable ones break down, leaving behind only the fittest structures in the plasma.

So, could helical clusters formed from interstellar dust be somehow alive? "These complex, self-organized plasma structures exhibit all the necessary properties to qualify them as candidates for inorganic living matter," says Tsytovich, "they are autonomous, they reproduce and they evolve".

He adds that the plasma conditions needed to form these helical structures are common in outer space. However, plasmas can also form under more down to earth conditions such as the point of a lightning strike. The researchers hint that perhaps an inorganic form of life emerged on the primordial earth, which then acted as the template for the more familiar organic molecules we know today.

Simulated universe theory: Wrong or meaningless?

published Aug 15, 2007 11:46   by admin ( last modified Aug 15, 2007 11:46 )
It is popular today to speculate that we live in a computer simulation. There are at least two problems with this theory:

1) We have no idea if computers can ever be as powerful as to do this simulation. In effect, we already today have big problems getting complex systems to work. Mac OS X was preceded by botched attempts by Apple to create a new operating system from scratch. Windows NT (and its descendants 2000 and XP and Vista) was created by hiring Dave Cutler et consortes who made Vax/VMS. Just extrapolating the curves may well be naïve.

2) If we indeed are simulated, than why specifically by a computer? We know that our current computer systems have problems "evolving" into more meaningful complexity. Why not by something completely different? If we agree that there are different kinds of simulations than by a computer, maybe there are more of these other kinds of simulations? Maybe they vastly outnumber computer simulations? In that case we can just state "We live in something that is guided by something", which is getting close to standard physics. Maybe there aren't turtles all the way down?
