published Jun 08, 2007 09:53   by admin ( last modified Jun 08, 2007 09:53 )
Men fartyget drog inget svall.

Navigator of the Seas är 311 meter långt, 39 meter brett och väger 142 000 ton.

published Jun 07, 2007 05:18   by admin ( last modified Jun 07, 2007 05:18 )

“We were surprised to find that talc has added benefits besides causing scarring and taking away the fluid that surrounds the lung,” Antony said. “The cells that cover the lining of the lung are stimulated by the presence of talc to produce a factor that inhibits the growth of blood vessels and kills the tumor cells themselves.” Less than one day after treatment with talc, patients began producing 10-fold higher levels of endostatin, a hormone released by healthy lung cells. Endostatin prevents new blood vessels from forming, slows cell growth and movement, and even induces nearby tumor cells to commit suicide. All of these make it hard for tumors to grow and spread into healthy lung tissue.

You've never seen data presented like this. With the drama and urgency of a sportscaster, Hans Rosling debunks myths about the so-called "developing world" using extraordinary animation software developed by his Gapminder Foundation. The Trendalyzer software (recently acquired by Google) turns complex global trends into lively animations, making decades of data pop. Asian countries, as colorful bubbles, float across the grid -- toward better national health

Lou Reed turnerar med "Berlin"

published Jun 06, 2007 11:20   by admin ( last modified Jun 06, 2007 11:20 )

For Reed, it is much more than just another show: it is a catharsis. It marks the resolution of 34 years of hurt that began on the day the album Berlin was first stamped on vinyl. In Reed's estimation, Berlin was his masterpiece, a view he still holds today.

published Jun 06, 2007 10:31   by admin ( last modified Jun 06, 2007 10:31 )
Why were not all of the new poisons killing people? An important clue emerged in the 1980s when the biochemist Bruce Ames tested thousands of chemicals and found that natural compounds were as likely to be carcinogenic as synthetic ones. Ames found that 99.99 percent of the carcinogens in our diet were natural, which does not mean that we are being poisoned by the natural pesticides in spinach and lettuce. We ingest most carcinogens, natural or synthetic, in such small quantities that they do not hurt us.

Terroristretorik

published Jun 05, 2007 12:04   by admin ( last modified Jun 05, 2007 12:04 )

  • Displacement of responsibility—This involves distorting the relationship between one's actions and the effects of those actions, and/or blaming the victim or circumstances for violent actions and innocent deaths.
  • Diffusion of responsibility—This is done by segmenting duties, where each individual action by itself is fairly benign, but the totality is harmful. Group decisions can also be used to diffuse individual responsibility for an action.
  • Dehumanization of targets—Committing violence against innocents is easier if they are not perceived as fellow, individual humans. One can minimize the brutality imposed on others by focusing, instead, on the impersonal character of the attacks and the targets' symbolic meaning, and by naming and viewing the victims as less than human—vermin, dogs, and so forth. Osama bin Laden, for example, bestializes Americans as "lowly people" perpetrating acts that "the most ravenous of animals would not descend to."
  • Euphemistic language—This includes making injurious conduct respectable and reducing personal responsibility by referring to it in impersonal terms. For example, al-Qaida always refers to the 9/11 events as attacks on symbols of American power and consumerism, never to the murder of some 3,000 men, women, and children.
  • Advantageous comparisons—Reprehensible conduct is masked by comparing it to other, more injurious behavior. Again, the deaths of innocent people, including children, in the 9/11 attacks during peacetime are compared to the U.S. atomic bombing of Japan to end World War II, in which hundreds of thousands were killed, but the United States was never the aggressor, not even in victory.
  • Distortion of sequence of events and attribution of blame—Disregarding facts or distorting the consequences of a violent action on fellow citizens by arguing that a terrorist attack was only a retaliatory action or defensive measure against a previous provocation of the enemy allows terrorists to reduce personal feelings of guilt. The victim gets blamed and others are accused of bringing about reprehensible actions, as when kidnapped hostages are beheaded because their governments failed to meet terrorist demands.

In a study of 4,629 Black and White 18-30 year olds from four metropolitan areas (sampled from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in (Young) Adults Study cohort (CARDIA), psychologists examined whether the tendency to be hostile went along with having decreased lung function in otherwise healthy young adults. The results indicated that the more hostile one’s personality—characterized by aggression or anger, for example—the lower levels one’s of lung function even after controlling for age, height, socioeconomic status, smoking status and presence of asthma.

Study at the University of Liverpool, in collaboration with the University of Birmingham, into the behaviour of the orang-utan, has now suggests that knuckle-walking evolved quite recently in chimpanzees and gorillas, as a way of moving on the forest floor, whilst walking on two legs – assisted by the support of tree branches – is an older trait and evolved from tree walking. The study suggests that walking on two legs was always a feature of great-ape behaviour and human ancestors never passed through a knuckle-walking phase.

Today at the annual meeting of the American Aging Association, University of Michigan scientist Richard A. Miller reports early results from a mouse study his lab and two others are conducting for the National Institute on Aging. The study, now in its fourth year, will test as many as two dozen possible anti-aging agents in animals in the next five years. The other centers are the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas, and the Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine. The scientists were surprised to find so quickly that one agent showed promise: NDGA, a compound derived from creosote bushes. These common North American desert shrubs have been traditionally used by Native Americans as healing remedies.

Att sprida sin gener till växter...

published Jun 02, 2007 10:16   by admin ( last modified Jun 02, 2007 10:16 )
Now, suppose you want to add a set of human genes -- like maybe, six or seven. And you think the genes might interact with each other in some way. To avoid unwanted interactions, you might pick all the genes from one individual, where you know that they didn't interact badly. Sure, you will test them in various models to make sure. But it's easy to pick all the genes from the same person. Make it Watson.

published Jun 02, 2007 10:12   by admin ( last modified Jun 02, 2007 10:12 )
Now, I have my doubts about whether this scenario will come to pass. For one thing, SNP screening is going to be a lot cheaper than whole-genome sequencing for a long time, and probably will be just as informative. The benefit of the whole-genome sequence -- that it finds the rare variants that no one else has -- also makes it much less medically useful, since nobody knows what your unique rare variants actually do.

This is a point that constantly amazes me -- do people not realize that it is unnatural to have purple potatoes and zebra-striped tomatoes, and all other manner of garden mutants? That, for the most part, it is unnatural for vegetables (i.e., non-fruit and non-seed plant parts) to be tasty and delicious? Plants don't want you to eat them!
