Medical research has revealed enough about the causes and prevention of heart attacks that they could be nearly eliminated. Yet nearly 16 million Americans are living with coronary heart disease, and nearly half a million die from it each year.

published Apr 07, 2007 12:17   by admin ( last modified Apr 07, 2007 12:17 )
IBM plans to crank up the speed on its Power6 server chip to 5 GHz, far higher than competing processors from Intel Corp. and Sun Microsystems Inc. Despite its high frequency, the chip will avoid overheating through its small, 65-nanometer-process geometry, high-bandwidth buses running as fast as 75GB per second and voltage thresholds as low as 0.8 volts, IBM said.

Follow the money.

Eritrea has banned female circumcision, a life-threatening tradition that aid groups say is inflicted upon about 90 percent of the country's women. A government statement issued on Thursday said anyone who requested, took part in or promoted the practice now faces a fine of several hundred dollars or up to 10 years in jail. "Female circumcision is a procedure that seriously endangers the health of women, causes them considerable pain and suffering besides threatening their lives," the statement said. "Whosoever requests, incites or promotes female circumcision ... shall be [punished] with a fine and imprisonment." The ban took effect on March 31, it said.

The consequence of that release is stress-free mice. Dr Lowry was able to measure their stress by dropping them into a tiny swimming pool. Previous research has shown that unstressed mice enjoy swimming, while stressed ones do not. His mice swam around enthusiastically. This result is intriguing for two reasons. First, it offers the possibility of treating clinical depression with what is, in effect, a vaccination. Indeed, M. vaccae is considered a bit of a wonder-bug in this context. Besides cancer, and now depression, it is being looked at as a way of treating Crohn's disease (an inflammation of the gut) and rheumatoid arthritis.

Årets roligaste aprilskämt: i'Kia-bilen

published Apr 04, 2007 10:19   by admin ( last modified Apr 04, 2007 10:19 )

Managing Director of Kia Motors (UK) Ltd, Paul Philpott said; "Our design teams in Germany and California have been led by our satellite office in Sweden. It's an important step which will bring positive results for the brand in the UK and Europe. And this is particularly good for the environment - any parts left over after building the Concept i can be returned to the local dealer which will make sure they are plumbed back into the supply chain. The target price is under £4,000 which we think offers excellent value."

Imagine you could treat cancer by taking a pill, then directing a laser light toward the location of the tumor. The growth would dissolve with no chemotherapy, and no harm to healthy tissue. It might sound futuristic, but a select number of cancer patients already benefit from the method, called photodynamic therapy. An upgrade for the procedure could save thousands more cancer patients from the horrors of chemotherapy.

It found some teachers are dropping courses covering the Holocaust at the earliest opportunity over fears Muslim pupils might express anti-Semitic and anti-Israel reactions in class. The researchers gave the example of a secondary school in an unnamed northern city, which dropped the Holocaust as a subject for GCSE coursework. The report said teachers feared confronting 'anti-Semitic sentiment and Holocaust denial among some Muslim pupils'.

Dagens term: Concept count

published Apr 04, 2007 05:20   by admin ( last modified Apr 04, 2007 05:20 )

Concept count is a useful metric when you’re trying to figure out which technologies will or won’t be adopted. I mentioned this idea in a discussion of calendar cross-publishing, where I enumerated the numbingly long list of concepts I had to understand in order to achieve bidirectional synchronization of my Outlook (business) and Google (family) calendars.

published Apr 04, 2007 03:31   by admin ( last modified Apr 04, 2007 03:31 )

Länk - Klassisk musik stort i Kina

China, with an estimated 30 million piano students and 10 million violin students, is on an opposite trajectory. Tests to enter the top conservatories now attract nearly 200,000 students a year, compared with a few thousand annually in the 1980s, according to the Chinese Musicians Association. Music-related manufacturing has also exploded. As of 2003, 87 factories made Western-style musical instruments. By last year, the number had grown to 142 factories producing 370,000 pianos, one million violins and six million guitars. China dominates world production of all three.

published Apr 03, 2007 10:34   by admin ( last modified Apr 03, 2007 10:34 )

“We have a lot of interest from special forces. Jumping from 4,000m [13,000ft] with the propelled system you could fly for 200km,” says civilian skydiving instructor and wing-parachute system test pilot Frank Carreras.

Now a top British scientist has evaluated the comparative risks and concluded that for those most affected by the disaster – emergency workers and people living nearby – the increased risk of premature death due to radiation is around 1 per cent. That is roughly the same as the risk of dying from diseases triggered by air pollution in a major city or the effects of inhaling other people's tobacco smoke, said Jim Smith of Britain's Centre for Ecology and Hydrology.

Derrell Teat, 63, a wastewater coordinator at an environmental company, recently found herself staking out a McDonald's. The man she believed was the last male descendant of her great-great-great grandfather's brother had refused to give her his DNA. But she decided to get it anyway. "I was going to take his coffee cup out of the garbage can," said Teat, who traveled to the Georgia mountains from Tampa, Florida, with her test kit. "I was willing to do whatever it took."

Vem styr pöbeln?

published Apr 01, 2007 10:37   by admin ( last modified Apr 01, 2007 10:37 )
