US CERT warned that Google, eBay, MySpace, Yahoo, and Microsoft were vulnerable, but that list is nowhere near exhaustive. Just about any banking website, online social network or other electronic forum that transmits certain types of security cookies is also susceptible. The vulnerability stems from websites' use of authentication cookies, which work much the way an ink-based hand stamp does at your favorite night club. Like the stamp, the cookie acts as assurance to sensitive web servers that the user has already been vetted by security and is authorized to tread beyond the velvet rope.

The new enzyme was created by generating random mutations in genes that make a naturally occurring enzyme. The altered genes were then put into a bacterium, which fabricated a series of randomly mutated new enzymes. These enzyme variants were then tested in a high throughput screen where chemical molecules engineered to fluoresce stop glowing when a sugar is successfully attached.

I den video (677 MB) som nu finns på nätet så stoppas tydligen videon varje gång rösten nämner något som hänt efter invasionen av Irak. Detta tyder ju då förmodligen på att Usama bin Laden inte är i skick att göra en video, vilket sannolikt innebär att han är död.

Osama Bin Laden's widely publicized video address to the American people has a peculiarity that casts serious doubt on its authenticity: the video freezes at about 1 minute and 36 58 seconds, and motion only resumes again at 12:30. The video then freezes again at 14:02 remains frozen until the end. All references to current events, such as the 62nd anniversary of the U.S. atomic bombing of Japan, and Sarkozy and Brown being the leaders of France and the UK, respectively, occur when the video is frozen! The words spoken when the video is in motion contain no references to contemporary events and could have been (and likely were) made before the U.S. invasion of Iraq.

Efter jag hade slutat gymnasiet var det en glipa innan jag skulle göra lumpen, och då arbetade jag som lärarvikarie i Flemingsbergsskolan i Huddinge. Detta var i mitten på åttiotalet.

Skolan var verkligen blandad att undervisa i. Många av de anställda var morsor till mina kompisar och rejäla och rekorderliga damer. Vissa klasser var tunga medan andra var lätta. Jag minns speciellt en klass som man sällan fick eftersom dess lärare aldrig var sjuka. De skötte undervisningen själva. Klassen var dominerad av tjejer och hade ett system där några läste in sig på ämnet i förväg och sedan skötte undervisningen, under lärarens överinsyn. Klassen hade ett antal elever som var så pass rappa i repliken så att det var inte alldeles lätt att hålla sig allvarlig heller, de hade nog kunnat rekryterats direkt som manusförfattare till någon komediserie.

Men det intressanta är hur man skötte stökigare element i skolan. Man hade en stege som lärare och elever kände till, där polisen ingick. Man ställde inte kravet på lärare att de skulle vara ordningsvakter, utan eskalerade en situation så var man inte rädd för att klappa till med stora klubban. Detta hände dock aldrig mej, så jag såg det inte i praktiken. Vid ett av mina första pass slängde jag ut 19 av 21 elever, men sedan gick det bättre. Jag ställde kraven att de skulle vara tysta och inte ha ytterkläder på sig. Jag ställde inte kravet att de skulle arbeta. Men efter att ha suttit tysta en stund gör de flesta det ändå för det finns inget bättre att göra. Här talar vi så klart om de tyngre grupperna på skolan. Målet som jag satte var lågt, men det gick ut på att bereda studiero för de som ville studera. Jag gjorde klart att de som inte var tysta, var av mindre intresse. Det fick många att ändra sig. Hade jag jobbat längre än några månader så hade jag ju fått jobba annorlunda och ta ett helhetsgrepp.

Men det är väldigt viktigt att inskärpa att om våld eller hot om våld möter läraren, så är det inte lärarens ansvar att bemöta det. Det ska bemötas professionellt, av proffs. I sista hand polisen. Elever som uppvisar sådant beteende har redan straffat ut sig från ett normalt samtal. Om man tydliggör detta, räddar man ett antal själar direkt. De som ändå fortsätter med våld eller hot om våld får man då ta hand om speciellt, med de mjuka eller hårda åtgärder som står till buds.

Men om man accepterar våld och hot om våld så har man redan förlorat. Då är det något fel i systemet. Stegen fungerar inte.

Våld och hot är vardag på Sveriges största arbetsplats - skolan. 2007 kan bli det värsta året någonsin, redan har nära 300 anmälningar kommit in till Arbetsmiljöverket. Trots det får de flesta lärarstudenterna ingen utbildning alls i konflikthantering.

The researchers sampled saliva from 50 European-American undergraduates and found as many as 15 copies of the amylase gene per person. By comparison, all 15 chimpanzees they sampled had exactly two copies each. Students with more copies of the gene also had higher concentrations of the enzyme in their spit. Next, the team studied groups of humans with differing diets. They found a similar correspondence between the amount of starch in a group's diet and the average number of amylase gene copies its individuals possessed. For example, the Yakut of the Arctic, whose traditional diet centers around fish, had fewer copies than the related Japanese, whose diet includes starchy foods like rice, Dominy said.

When trying to understand someone's intentions, non-human primates expect others to act rationally by performing the most appropriate action allowed by the environment, according to a new study by researchers at Harvard University.

For example, Milford Wolpoff and I (2001) showed that the rate of evolution of brain size in Late Pleistocene Neandertals was probably directionally selected. Yet, we could not reject the hypothesis of drift, under the condition that the Neandertal population was as small as 1200 effective individuals. Keep in mind that brain size evolution in humans is one of the most rapid evolutionary trends known for any large mammal! The hypothesis of drift is very hard to refute statistically with paleontological data, particularly in the absence of reliable data about demography.

This is consistent with the theory that positive selection may play a role in the persistence of schizophrenia at a frequency of one per cent in human populations around the world, despite its strong effects on reproductive fitness and its high heritability from generation-to-generation. It also provides genetic evidence consistent with the long-standing theory that schizophrenia represents, in part, a maladaptive by-product of adaptive changes during human evolution - possibly to do with aspects of creativity and human cognition.

The new genome, Dr. Venter's team reports, makes clear that the variation in the genetic programming carried by an individual is much greater than expected. In at least 44 percent of Dr. Venter's genes, the copies inherited from his mother differ from those inherited from his father, according to the analysis published in Tuesday's issue of PLoS Biology.

Man har gjort tester med CDC (Center for Disease Control) i USA. CDC har gett ut ett informationsblad där man säger vilka påståenden som är sanna respektive falska om influensavaccin. Problemet är bara att folk rör ihop vilka det var som var sanna och vilka som var falska efter några dagar.

Bara det faktum att man nämner att påstående gör att folk tror på det. Och inte blir det bättre av att CDC har ett gott rykte så folk börjar påstå att "CDC har sagt det"

When University of Michigan social psychologist Norbert Schwarz had volunteers read the CDC flier, however, he found that within 30 minutes, older people misremembered 28 percent of the false statements as true. Three days later, they remembered 40 percent of the myths as factual.

Younger people did better at first, but three days later they made as many errors as older people did after 30 minutes. Most troubling was that people of all ages now felt that the source of their false beliefs was the respected CDC.

Det här påminner ju lite om barnuppfostran, man ska inte säga vad barnen inte skall göra, utan istället föregå med gott exempel.

Analogt så bör man bemöta kritik med påståenden som visar fördelarna med ens ståndpunkt, snarare än att bara säga "Nej, fel.". Tony Blair var rätt bra på det där.

Och jag skrev ju på bloggen här om att man ska uppmuntra beteende som omöjliggör det man vil undvika, istället för att direkt förbjuda det oönskade beteendet.

Lean mass in general is one major defining predictor of longevity. The concept of dying of "natural causes" is, in reality, better described as "dying from organ failure due to loss of organ reserve and lean tissue." Organ reserve (the functional capacity of any or all organs necessary to support life) and skeletal muscle mass tend to increase or decrease together depending on the stimulus or lack of it.

So, as a rule of thumb, anything you do to build muscle generally tends also to build or improve other tissue, including vital organs (heart, liver, lungs, kidneys, etc). Similarly, anything you do to diminish muscle tends likewise to have a negative effect on organ reserve. We call it "atrophy." Of course, the old adage "use it or lose it" has significance here, since it is presumed that by moving about, by doing work and generally being "vital" you give your body a reason to "adapt" to the work.

Furthermore, because your muscles are generally fed either directly or indirectly by those organs, they are also called upon to adapt and stay vital. Stay in bed for a few weeks and you'll lose both muscle mass and organ reserve. If you are young, you can build both back with diet and minimal exercise. If you are old, it's often the beginning of the end.
