Summary: Use Firestarter

I have been using a 3G modem and needed to hook up one more computer to it. In Windows XP you can use Internet Connection Sharing that will e.g. share the Internet connection out via the Ethernet port. In this way the Windows machine connects to the Internet via a 3G modem (or Wi-Fi) and the other machine is connected via an Ethernet cable and the Windows computer takes care of giving the other computer a private IP number and transparently routes the traffic from that computer to and from the Internet. It is very handy. You can have several computers behind the Windows machine as well. However the Windows connection to 3G kept crashing and I knew my Linux 3G connection is super stable.

So how do I go about routing the other way around, i.e. to use the Linux computer to connect to the Internet and then take care of dishing out the Internet to the Windows computer (or any number of computers)? The easiest route (pun intended) I found was to download and install a firewall called Firestarter on Linux. Firestarter has a big shiny button for doing Internet connection sharing.

Well, it's actually a normal sized check box...

If you want your Linux machine to dish out dynamic private IP numbers (or several) on the private network, you also need to install a local DHCP server on the Linux machine. It will be automatically detected by Firestarter.

Om Ubuntu Linux 8.04 I installed Firestarter like this:

sudo apt-get install firestarter

and then the dhcp server (I did this one from synaptic, the GUI to apt-get). It was very easy.

En sak som jag funderat över är om generna mellan man och kvinna verkligen bidrar lika mycket till ett barn. Det borde rimligtvis förekomma en kamp mellan dem, och det gör det också verkar man nu komma fram till. Genom att bygga på denna hypotes finns det nu forskare som menar att mentalsjukdomar till viss del kan förklaras av denna kamp.

Ett indicium är att det finns två olika mentalsjukdomar som beror på en skada på samma ställe i generna, men där vilken av de två sjukdomarna det blir, beror på om det är moderns eller faderns DNA som blir uttryckt där:

Med detta vill jag ha sagt att det ligger stora pengar i att reglera vad folk får skicka omkring i världen. På Slashdot påpekar signaturen pieterh att många tjänar på att ha ett mindre fritt Internet: Om ISP:erna kan reglera vad som skickas över Internet kan de blockera P2P-trafik, men också produkter som konkurrerar med deras egna produkter, t ex en egen IP-telefonilösning osv. pieterh listar lite affärsmöjlgheter som kommer ur ett reglerat Internet:

Telecoms firms that want a mandate to filter all Internet traffic so that they can block all P2P, and then VoIP, and then video streaming and then anything which competes with their monopoly products.
* Large ISPs, because these are now all owned by the telecoms firms.
* Vendors like Cisco because they want to sell loads and loads of expensive filtering equipment.

MTV har nu bestämt sig föär att publicera alla musikvideos sedan MTV:s barndom på Internet. Viacom som äger MTV har tidigare med juridiska medel försökt hindra Youtube att publicera och nu verkar de ha bestämt sig för att istället bräcka Youtube vad gäller tillgänglighet på musikvideos.

Alla videos är inte upplagada än, men t ex "Space Oddity" finns där, och "Blue Monday".

Nu har man använt datorer i kommunalvalen i Finland för att hantera folks röstning. Problemet som uppstod nu var att röstmaskinerna kom i ett odefinierat läge vad gäller användargränssnittet, dvs den instruktion som gått ut till väljarna om hur man avbryter en röstning, täckte inte alla scenarier. Och nu står man där med några hundra röster som inte blev av, vilket är mycket i kommunalval.

I vilket fall som helst är det dumt att använda datorer för demokratiska val.
Använd papper och penna. Det fungerar utmärkt, är lätt att verfiera och göra om.

It seems that the system required the voter to insert a smart card to identify the voter, type in their selected candidate number, then press "ok", check the candidate details on the screen, and then press "ok" again. Some voters did not press "ok" for the second time, but instead removed their smart card from the voting terminal prematurely, causing their ballots not to be cast. This usability issue was exacerbated by Ministry of Justice instructions, which specifically said that in order to cancel the voting process, the user should click on "cancel" and after that, remove the smart card. Thus, some voters did not realise that their vote had not been registered.
