Den man som Scotland Yard pekar ut som den skyldige till mordet på den ryska dissidenten Alexander Litvinenko, kommer att gå på stor Champion's League-final i Storbritannien Moskva. Storbritannien kan inte göra något för Andrei Lugovoi åtnjuter numera immunitet som varande parlamentsledamot i den ryska Duman för att matchen utspelar sig i Moskva. Varhelst Lugovoi rörde sig i London efter mordet och på vägen hem, så efterlämnade han ett spår av Polonium, vilket gör att det är svårt att betvivla Scotland Yards slutsatser. Ryslland vägrade lämna ut honom.

Lugovois närvaro på matchen (på VIP-läktaren) kan inte betraktas som något annat än ett hån mot Storbritannien, mot rättsamhället och mot allmän anständighet.

Fast, när jag tänker efter, kan de inte bara vägra honom visum? Mer radikalt vore ju att arrestera honom på plats men det kommer nog inte att göras.

Om man släpar sin resväska över något syntetgolv på en flygplats, t ex ett sådant där golv som har en massa runda förhöjningar - så märker man att det brummar när man kör väskan över golvet. Då kan man ju faktiskt skapa golv som ger olika toner när man drar väskan över dem, och som har extra upphöjningar för en rytm. Jättekul idé.

För eller senare måste ju robotarmar (eller -fingrar) bli bättre på att utföra operationer än att direkt använda mänskliga händer. Nu har en robot styrd av kirurger operererat bort en hjärntumör:

Asus, en av världens största tillverkare av moderkort, och som också gör laptops t ex EePc, ska nu börja lägga in en snabbstartad Linuxdistribution med Firefox och Skype inbyggt,  på miljoner moderkort. Detta är en intressant utveckling. Här satt man och fokuserade på Microsoft och Intel och så visar det sig att det är moderkortstillverkare som sitter med trumf på hand.

On Wednesday, DeviceVM, the company behind the distribution, said the hardware manufacturer would be putting Splashtop — which Asus calls "Express Gate" — into a million motherboards a month. Splashtop includes a Firefox-derived browser and the Skype internet-telephony application.

Med Microsoft live maps så kan man förutom att få en satellitbild ovanifrån också få bilder snett uppifrån, där man kan se fasader och annat. Detta är bra för att man ska kunna orientera sig. Det fungerar med London och jag kollade just att det fungerar i Stockholm. Google har ju street view, men inte vad jag sett på t ex London eller Stockholm.

Det fanns en tid då många trodde att gener kunde förändras av miljön ( t ex ens livsstil och livsval), så att ens avkomma fick en annan genetisk uppsättning. Detta sätt att se det kallas Lamarckism, och vederlades.

Men nu visar det sig att hur generna uttrycker sig är variabelt, och även om själva gensekvensen inte ändrar sig så gör dess uttryck (dvs vad den gör) det. Och denna förändring kan vara stabil över celldelningar. Någon faktor kan alltså  slå på, av eller modifiera ett genetiskt uttryck och detta fortbestår, i vissa fall faktiskt över generationer, även om jag inte vet om det sistnämnda täcks av termen epigenetik. Detta innebär att en del människor i grunden blir märkta av upplevelser och situationer (och kemikalier) som de blir utsatta för.

Oxfords Nick Bostrom resonerar mycket klokt och intressant om det är så bra att hitta liv på Mars. Vad gäller avancerat liv i universum så är det ju så, att det måste vara olika enkelt att hoppa från en utvecklingsnivå till en annan. Vissa saker, som öga och ben har utvecklats flera gånger oberoende på jorden, och är därför inte så svårt, det är i alla fall ingen tröskel som gör att det bara har hänt en gång i universums historia. Man kan dock tänka sig att det finns höga trösklar, filter, där det är svårt att passera i vägen mot avancerat liv.

Om vi hittar utdött liv i universum, så är det bättre för oss, ju mer primitivt det var vid sin död. Och det bästa är om vi inte hittar liv alls. För varje dött liv vi hittar så vet vi att det övermannats av universum hårda villkor, och att något liknade kan drabba oss. Och om vi hittar en utdöd civilisation mer avancerad än oss, så ka det vara så att det stora filtret, den höga tröskeln ligger framför oss. För någon hög tröskel måste det finnas, annars hade vi märkt av liv från rymden för länge sedan.

But we would have some grounds for hope that all or most of the Great Filter is in our past if Mars is found to be barren. In that case, we may have a significant chance of one day growing into something greater than we are now.

We were most interested in the role parents play in controlling their children's risky behaviors. Currently, the theories are at two extremes, from "parents have every way to make children do whatever they want their children to do" to the theory that parents are helpless in the face of adolescent behaviors. If we think about this dynamically, we're probably actually somewhere in the middle. While the analysis does not reveal how intense social contact might ward off childhood leukaemia, it bolsters the theory that children exposed to common infections early in life gain protection from the disease. It is known that environments such as day care centres increase the chance of infections spreading. For Russia, the war on terror is about Chechnya. For China, it is about the Uighurs of Xinjiang province. Clay Shirky gör en väldigt rolig analys om det gamla TV-samhället och det nya Internet. När den industriella revolutionen i Storbritannien på ett djupt sätt började påverka människors liv så reagerade dessa med att berusa sig på gin. När detta hade gjorts i en generation så var man mogen för att forma de nya institutioner som följde med industrisamhället. Men Shirky menar att ginet fyllde en funktion som en tillfällig plattform av slöseri med ledig tid och energi  innan man byggt upp nya institutioner. Han ser TV:n på samma sätt som ginet, framför allt TV-serier. TV:n absorberade en massa fritid som hade frigjorts i det moderna samhället och hjälpte till att hålla samhället stabilt, tills nya institutioner (Internet) hade byggts upp.

And every half-hour that I watched that was a half an hour I wasn't posting at my blog or editing Wikipedia or contributing to a mailing list. Bluetooth är ett sätt för mobiltelefoner, headsets och annat att kommunicera trådlöst, via radio. Alla radiosignaler man skickar ut som har någon form av unikt fingeravtryck, gör att du kan spåras. I Storbritannien har man gjort ett försök med att spåra 10 000 personer genom att detektera deras bluetooth-utrustning.

Om man kombinerar detta med övervakningskameror eller med kunskap om individers hemadress och jobbadress, kan man etablera vilken bluetoothsignal som tillhör vilken individ. Det innebär att man liksom taggat sig själv och gjort att man kan spåras över nejden, om sensorer finns uppsatta, .

What the Kostakos found is that it is straightforward to capture data on people’s encounters using bluetooth. In fact they captured data on 10,000 unique devices during the 6 month study. Yep, that’s 10,000. Exactly how much you can tell about these encounters isn’t clear. But hey, this is only a demonstration (either that or they’re keeping schtum about the juicy details).
