Människor som flyttar till varmare klimat lever mycket längre, och ökad dödlighet av minusgrader är ett mycket större problem än värmeböljor, enligt New York Times. Köld stressar kroppen.

Heat waves may receive more publicity, but it turns out that cold periods — days with an average temperature below 30 degrees —have more significant and longer-lasting effects on human mortality. More people die in cold periods than in homicides.

Extreme cold brings cardiovascular stress as human bodies struggle to adjust to the temperature; many of the deaths in these periods come through heart attacks. Heat waves tend to kill people who were already weakened and would have died soon anyway; cold periods bring additional people to the verge of death. When retired people move to a warmer state, their life expectancy rises dramatically.

But this is a slightly misleading figure, because of the 16 links that day, Boing Boing was the first to post 8 of them. That means that for 50% of the links that Boing Boing posts, it was the first blog to find them. I also noticed that the later in the day the links were posted, the more likely that other blogs had managed to scoop Boing Boing. This indicates that many of the links posted on Boing Boing are to URLs that were created within a 24-hour time span.

“Fish oils can have complex and varied effects on the heart,” says Jenkins, a U of T Professor of Medicine who runs the Clinical Nutrition and Risk Factor Modification Centre at St. Michael’s Hospital. “These effects include blocking cardiac ion channels, reducing fibrosis in response to mechanical stress, decreasing blood coagulation, and possibly altering immune function.”

Many scientists agree. A vast flotilla of industrial trawlers from the European Union, China, Russia and elsewhere, together with an abundance of local boats, have so thoroughly scoured northwest Africa’s ocean floor that major fish populations are collapsing. That has crippled coastal economies and added to the surge of illegal migrants who brave the high seas in wooden pirogues hoping to reach Europe. While reasons for immigration are as varied as fish species, Europe’s lure has clearly intensified as northwest Africa’s fish population has dwindled.

Många stora nyhetssajter ställer in den besökande webbläsaren att autouppdatera sidan man tittar på. Detta är tänkt så att man inte ska missa nyheter som dyker upp på sajten, men det används också för att få höga besökssiffror. Hur ofta autouppdateringen är satt ger stora skillnader i statistiken. Enligt Drew Curtis på Fark rör det sig om allt 20% eller 50% fler hits beroende på hur kort intervallet är i tid mellan uppdateringarna.

Fark.com kör ett experiment med autouppdatering  bara idag för att se hur det fungerar med serverlast och vad folk tycker om det. Curtis uppskattar att ett intervall på 30 minuter ger 20% mer hits, även unika hits av någon konstig anledning, vilket förmodligen snarare har att göra med dålig mätprecision. 10 minuters intervall bör enligt Curtis ge 50% mer hits.

Autouppdatering används förmodligen av en del sajter för att blåsa upp besökssiffrorna på ett sådant sätt att man kan tjäna mer reklampengar, etersom de som betalar dessa kampanjer inte förstår tekniken. En sajt som nämns av Drew  med referens till denna bloggpost är Drudge report. Den uppdaterar så ofta som var tredje minut.  Valleywag har en bild över hur ofta en del sajter autouppdaterar:

Fark har en gång provat att sätt så kort intervall som tre minuter, och siffrorna blev då enorma, så man fick avbryta för att inte överlasta servrarna.

Själv tycker jag illa om autouppdaterande sajter. Jag surfar i Firefox med väldigt många flikar, och autoppdaterande sidor stjäl alla trådar så att programmet blir långsamt. eller tillfälligt låst. Många svenska nyhetssajter har autouppdatering.

Last year we ran a test where we set Fark to refresh at the same rate as the Drudge Report (every three minutes). Almost immediately were trending toward passing them in traffic for the day (somewhere on the order of 15-20 million pageviews). We weren’t able to complete the test, by 9am that morning traffic was so cripplingly high we had to turn it off on our end. Our servers couldn’t take it. We ran a second test where we set the refresh to 30 minutes, the same rate that CNN refreshes. Traffic jumped 20% for the day. So did uniques, strangely. I’m not sure what caused that.

Decellularization is the process of removing all of the cells from an organ – in this case an animal cadaver heart – leaving only the extracellular matrix, the framework between the cells, intact. After successfully removing all of the cells from both rat and pig hearts, researchers injected them with a mixture of progenitor cells that came from neonatal or newborn rat hearts and placed the structure in a sterile setting in the lab to grow.

A senior Ministry of Justice official last night confirmed that the department hoped to go even further, by extending the geographical range of the internal chips through a link-up with satellite-tracking similar to the system used to trace stolen vehicles. "All the options are on the table, and this is one we would like to pursue," the source added.

Delrepubliken Nordossetien, och därmed Ryssland, verkar göra vad de kan för att få så dålig PR som möjligt utomlands.

 
För några år sedan inträffade två tragedier i Schweiz. Två flygplan kolliderade, och flygledaren i tjänst blev sedan mördad av en anhörig till de som fanns på planet.

Man kan förutsätta att den danske ensamme flygledaren inte gjorde misstaget med vilje, men här skulle hämnd utkrävas. Nordossetiern som utförde dådet fick ett straff i Schweiz. Straffet blev nog kortare än de kunde blivit givet att mannen förlorat både sin fru och sina barn Detta är såklart de stora tragedierna där folk verkligen dog. Nu över till PR-tragedin:

Redan i fängelse utses mannen till årets nordossetier, och nu när han släpps fri så blir han utsedd och hyllad igen. Det är självklart tragedier som ligger bakom, men när ett helt folk till stor del tycker att det mannen gjort är det bästa någon gjort från regionen, och detta två gånger, måste man börja undra över hur förråad kulturen blivit där. De som röstat har ju inte förlorat sina anhöriga.

Det är en ren PR-katastrof.

Haverirapporten slog fast att flygledningens radarsystem inte fungerade som den skulle och att flygledningen i Schweiz var underbemannad med bara en person i tjänst. Den personen var dansken Peter Nielsen. Kollisionen inträffade efter det att ryska passagerarplanet följde hans instruktion att dyka, i stället för det automatiska varningssystemets uppmaning att stiga. I februari 2004 åkte Vitalij Kalojev till Schweiz för att träffa Peter Nielsen. Mötet slutade med att Peter Nielsen dog av tre knivhugg mot hjärtat inför ögonen på sin familj.

Att stabilisera ett land är inte lätt. Religiös fanatism t ex, har ofta visat sig ha en förmåga att leta sig in i folklager på ett sätt som gjort det svårt att liberalisera och få till fred. Extrema religiösa fantasier som utformats för att passa vår psykologi, vare sig det rör sig om "traditionella" religioner eller kommunism,  har förstört och hindrat många mänskliga framsteg.

Men liberalismen har verktyg som kan leta sig in ännu djupare: Marknaden. Orsaken till stigande huspriser, förutom ökande stabilitet, är att det finns en instititution i form av en fungerande marknad. Bli inte förvånade om motstånd mot  terror i Irak i framtiden kommer att motiveras av något så  pragmatiskt och materialistiskt som "risk för fallande huspriser". Frihandel och kapitalism har också en välgörande normupplösande inverkan på samhället och attackerar dess grundvalar – när dessa normer och grundvalar är förtryckande. Frihandel och kapitalism letar sig in i vrår och ger effekter dit mer klumpiga utrikespolitiska instrument inte når. Frihandel ger varje familj och individ incitament att göra lite bättre ifrån sig eftersom deras kunskap och arbete efterfrågas, istället för att undertryckas eller styras in i improduktiva banor. När fria människor agerar på en fri marknad så lär de sig också de dygder som ett fritt samhälle vilar på. Detta innebär inte att allt blir röda rosor med en gång. Även i ett fritt samhälle fortlever förtryckande mönster, fast avklingande.

Misstänkt och misstänkt förresten, det är rätt uppenbart. Internet används nu som verktyg för att visa på det absurda i att valdeltagande på 98% där 99% av dessa rösterna gick till Enade Ryssland. Officiellt alltså. Det är kul att se att Internet används på detta sätt!

Enligt Centrala valkommissionen var valdeltagandet i Ingusjetien 98% och Enade Ryssland fick 99%, men nu har namnunderskrifter (jämte personuppgifter) samlats in via en hemsida från människor som hävdar att de inte röstade. Hittills har de fått ihop över halva väljarkåren (87 tusen av 164 000 röstberättigade).

Ett flygplan från tillverkaren Airbus gjorde så häftiga manövrer i luften på en flight mellan Victoria och Toronto i Kanada att 10 personer, varav två i personalen, fick tas till sjukhus. Vittnen menar att det inte var turbulens utan konstiga manövrer från planets datoriserade system som ställde till det. Bättre flyga med Boeing?

Ett intressant sammanträffande är att Björklund föreslår 4 reaktorer till en befolkning på ungefär 10 miljoner, medan jag och Mikael Ståldal föreslog 200 reaktorer inom EU på Bloggregeringen. EU har i storleksordningen 500 miljoner invånare, vilket blir 4 reaktorer per 10 miljoner…

Våra beräkningar byggde på att ersätta hälften av naturgasen:

This is a very nice demonstration that mirror system-like activity is subject to sensory-motor learning, suggesting it is learned rather than hard-wired. But the real question for the mirror neuron theory of action understanding is what these newly trained volunteers "understand" about these movements. Since viewing index finger movement induces activity in the participants' pinky motor systems, do they now think they are viewing little finger movement? Of course not. They still understand that they are viewing index finger movement. Conclusion: mirror system activation is not necessarily correlated with "understanding" but rather with sensory-motor learning.

More important than the influencers, the researchers found, were the influenced. Once an idea spread to a critical mass of easily influenced individuals, it took hold and continued to spread to other easily influenced individuals. In some networks, it was far easier to get an idea established this way than in others. The entire structure of the network mattered, not just the few influential people.
