For instance, in the past two weeks we have had discussion of obesity and of knife crime. Social norms have hardly figured. If everybody thinks that everybody else is getting fat, then more people will put on weight. The campaigns designed to reduce obesity may be spreading it. Similarly the very idea that every young person is carrying a knife increases knife crime. The obvious route of making such behaviour seem odd and isolated appears not to have occurred to any major politician.

Doody said this is only the first study looking into the effects of Dimebon on Alzheimer's disease. She also noted that it involved only a relatively small population from one specific region of the world. The ongoing Phase 3 study will include several international locations including the United States.

It's not hard to have system B check that system A is on/off line, and step in if the latter is the case. But what happens when A is *mostly* or *sorta* online? Well, my assessment is that there is indeed some content, much of it interesting. The question of bogosity, however, is a little more difficult. It is clear that the forms used by academicians writing in this area go right off the bogosity scale, pegging my bogometer until it breaks. The quality of the actual analysis of various literary works varies tremendously and must be judged on a case-by-case basis, but I find most of it highly questionable. Buried in the muck, however, are a set of important and interesting ideas: that in reading a work it is illuminating to consider the contrast between what is said and what is not said, between what is explicit and what is assumed, and that popular notions of truth and value depend to a disturbingly high degree on the reader's credulity and willingness to accept the text's own claims as to its validity.

At this point, channeling Kim Cameron, I launched into an explanation of the laws of identity and the identity metasystem. Well, sort of. I didn’t say anything about cryptography, or digital certificates, or XML web services. But I did paint a picture of a world in which individuals interact with many identity providers and many relying parties, in which all actors trust one another in exactly the ways they already do today, and in which disclosure of personal information is minimal and context-dependent.

Summary: A lot of the formatting, such as tab stops cannot be done from the normal stylesheet editor. The settings you set there will be overridden. Use the context menu item edit index/table instead. The menu item is available when you right click directly at the table of contents in your document:

I'ven been trying to get my table of contents to look good, and previously failed. The table of contents of my document has style sheets, called "Contents 1" and "Contents 2". However changes I make there, particularly tab stops, seem to be ignored.

It turns out that there is another place to change the formatting of the table of contents and that is in the edit index/table context menu:

Once selected you get to a tabbed dialog where one of the the tabs shows the following:

It contains a rather weird widget that helps you format the table of contents entry for a particular level. It is a row of cells where every second cell allows for inserting verbatim text, and every second is a place holder for entry text, page number or a tab stop.:

You can only have a page number place holder once ("#"), and the same goes for entry text ("F"). You assign a placeholder to a cell by clicking at the cell so that it looks depressed, and then click at one of the below buttons:

In the above picture two of the buttons are greyed out, beacuse theses placeholders have already been assigned to cells in the row. To get the buttons back to the active state, select the cell that contains the page number or entry ("#" or "F"), and replace it with a tab entry instead by clicking at the tab button.

For each tab entry you make, you can format it by selecting its cell, and then format its position and other things:

Sometimes when updating the table of contents, OpenOffice.org will lose the formatting and you will need to reapply the formatting.

Many of the most successful drives against the Taliban have been conducted by American forces redeployed from Iraq, in particular from Anbar province. But these military victories are the result of counterinsurgent tactics and strategies that were learned in Iraq and that have been applied triumphantly in Afghanistan.

The singularity is supposed to begin shortly after engineers build the first computer with greater-than-human intelligence. That achievement will trigger a series of cycles in which superintelligent machines beget even smarter machine progeny, going from generation to generation in weeks or days rather than decades or years. The availability of all that cheap, mass-­produced brilliance will spark explosive economic growth, an unending, hypersonic, tech­no­industrial rampage that by comparison will make the Industrial Revolution look like a bingo game.

The photoelectrochemical diodes function the same way that green leaves do, only not quite as well. They convert the energy from the sun into electrical energy that then breaks up water molecules. The titanium dioxide side of the diode produces oxygen and the copper titanium side produces hydrogen. Although 0.30 percent efficiency is low, Grimes notes that this is just a first go and that the device can be readily optimized.

I Stockholm kan de just nu vara svårt att komma från punkt A till punkt B. Det beror på att det är ombyggnadsarbeten på gång i anslutning till de broar och tunnlar som förbinder de öar som Stockholm är byggt på. Om man har många sätt att ta sig från punkt A till punkt B så kallas de att ha redundans i vägnätet. Redundans betyder ungefär "överflöd". Om man har detta "överflöd" så gör det inte så mycket om vägarbeten eller andra händelser stänger ner några av vägarna, det finns alltid fler sätt att ta sig fram.

Mycket av Europas olja och gas kommer från Ryssland, och Ryssland stänger ibland av flödet till vissa länder, av politiska skäl. Man stängde av flödet till Ukraina i några dagar efter den oranga revolutionen där, och man stängde av flödet till Litauen pga en "läcka" som behövde "repareras" men flödet har sedan aldrig slagits på igen.

Nu visar det sig att Tjeckien har varit lite smarta vad gäller pipelines på sitt territorium. Man har pipelines från Ryssland, men också från Tyskland. Ryssland kan därför inte helt stänga av tillförseln till Tjeckien, om Tjeckien bygger det missilskydd som Ryssland ogillar. Enligt The Economist så är det olja från Nordsjön och Mellanöstern som kommer från Tyskland, men varför inte bygga ett nätverk av pipelines inom EU som ge redundans, där olja och gas kan routas om till det land som behöver det, precis som elnätet fungerar idag.

Det kan finnas säkerhetspolitiska skäl att se en EU-styrning av detta, antingen genom direkt infrastruktur bekostad av EU eller genom ett regelverk om redundans, eller annan typ av underlättande.

Fortunately for the Czechs, they have some room to maneuver. Even if the deal with America goes through (it must be approved by the legislature, but there is serious opposition from law-makers and the public), the Druzhba pipeline from Siberia via Belarus and Ukraine need not be its choke-point. In the 1990s the Czech Republic built a transnational oil pipeline from Germany (tapping into oil from the North Sea and Middle East) to diversify away from Russia. If the missile-shield confrontation with Moscow gets uglier, the Czechs' foresight may look very clever indeed.

Det har varit en hel del som drivit med och förlöjligat regeln att man bara får ta med en deciliter vätska när man ska flyga. Men faktum är att det går att göra bomber även av vätska. I Storbritannien har nu tre personer erkänt sig skyldiga till att förbereda bomdåd med vätskor.

I ett försvar som väl bäst kan beskrivas som "kreativt", hävdar männen att de inte alls tänkte spränga ett plan i luften utan att den skulle användas som en slags smällare utanför en brittiska parlamentet, för att göra lite PR för en film om förtryck av muslimer som de håller på att spela in...Vi får väl se vad rätten tycker om det försvaret. Totalt åtta personer är anklagade.

En del av vänstern i USA, dvs de som stöder demokraterna, har en tendens att bete sig illa när någon republikan dör. De kanske inte är så många i procent räknat, men de gör mycket väsen av sig. I en diskussionstråd om att en pressekreterare för den nuvarande administrationen dött, var det en hel del som var mycket glada för frånfället. Andra reagerade mot detta, men fick svar av denna typ:

Många av kommentarerna i tråden var inte ett helt trevligt sätt att kommentera en människas död. Anledningen är ju att en del i vänstern anser de i högern i USA vara onda, demoner, som JonnyBGoode skrev i sitt inlägg som besvarades ovan:

Jag undrar var det hatet kommer från? En gissning är att de en del på vänsterkanten ser samhället som väldigt tätt ihopkopplat, så att alla hänger ihop (vilket ibland kan leda till sammansvärjningsteorier), medan de på högersidan känner sig mer skyddade från andra människors handlingar.

Faran med att se allting som hopkopplat är att det är lätt att bli en utilitarist och börja med en "ändamålen helgar medlen" -spiral. Diskussionen på Fark urartade till den grad att den normal osynlige moderatorn (han/hon dyker väl upp offentligt i en tråd av tusen eller så) fick säga till:

Lou Reeds Berlin handlar inte om musik. Lou Reeds Berlin handlar om att Lou Reed vill berätta något.

Albumet Berlin, som konserten spelar igenom i ordning, handlar om en familjs tillblivelse och förstörelse, och en människas död. Så även om stämningen var mycket god bland konsertdeltagarna - det låg nästan dans i luften innan konserten - så är Berlin inget man dansar till.

Det här är min tolkning om vad som sker: Berlin berättar osentimentalt om en man och en kvinna som blir ett par, och mannen är berättarrösten. Mannen och kvinnan blir först ett par och mannen ser upp till kvinnan. Men han har inte kontakt med sina känslor utan glider in i förhållandet som en iakttagare.

Han har tänkt ut en berättelse för henne som visar hur stark han är ("Men of good fortune)". Han håller sin känslor på avstånd, kanske han växte upp utan fadersgestalt. Att han förtränger sina känslor sätter honom paradoxalt sett i ett djupare beroende i den mening att han inte kan resonera sig ur förhållandet, när han inte ens vet varför han är attraherad. Han är "blindsided".

Hon säger att han inte räcker inte till, han är ingen man, bara en pojke (Caroline says I). Ilskan växer inom honom och han försöker psykologiskt bli en större man med större energi med hjälp av narkotika men snedtrippar och undrar om hon förstår hur han har det ("How do you think it feels")  i något som förutom en snedtripp också är en egotripp. När bandet, som kompletteras på scen av en barnkör och en blås- och strängsektion, kommer till denna låt så lyfter äntligen konserten, efter att ha varit lite trevande i början. I "How do you think it feels" är det ren ilska, som strömmar från scenen, men ilskan känns inte personlig, dvs Reed gestaltar inte mannen, utan mer en ilska över ilskan själv, "Hur blir det så här i människors liv?". Det blir alltså en dubbel ilska från scenen.

I "Oh Jim" tar mannens hat form och planeras ("Beat her black and blue and set it straight")

Mannen snedtrippar, kvinnan förlöjligar honom och missbrukar droger och han måste nu ta ett ledarskap. Tyvärr klarar han inte det, utan svaret blir en knuten näve. Från golvet svarar Caroline (Caroline says II) att hon inte längre känner något för honom. Caroline vill nu ha kickar, kickar i form av knark och uppmärksamhet. Hon försöker skapa en slags syntetisk kärlek ur droger och tillfälliga kärleksaffärer. Hon dras djupare in i narkotikaberoende och kärleksaffärer som tillsammans leder till prostitution.

De har två barn tillsammans och socialen griper in och tar barnen ("The Kids"). Mannen bryr sig inte, det är "hennes" barn ("They're taking her children away"). Han tar inget ledarskap, utan är så fixerad vid henne att han ser barnen som hennes, samtidigt som han återigen försöker skydda sig emotionellt genom att sätta sig själv utanför dramat ("I am the waterboy, the real game's not over here"). Efter barnen blivit omhändertagna är hon otröstlig, vilket han tolkar det som att hon nu förstår hur han känner ("Since she lost her daughter, it's her eyes that's filled with water, and I am much happier this way"). I själva verket har nu det enda fundament av emotionell stabilitet som fanns i hennes liv, moderskänslorna och barnens feeback,  ryckts bort.

Hon går djupare ned i självdestruktion (På jakt efter att någon ska rädda henne?) och hon tar livet av sig.

Han städar upp i lägenheten och går faktamässigt igenom vad som har hänt ("This is the place our children were conceived, candle lights lit the place at night"). Han känner sig både fri och plågad, vilket Lou Reed gestaltar genom att skrika "What a feeling", omväxlande med att sjunga det så,  ljuvt och ljust som på skivan.

I "Sad song" så ser han tillbaka på förhållandet. Han har överlevt, och man kan nog säga att hela hans existens handlar om att överleva genom att inte känna. Han klappar sig själv på axeln om hur tolerant han varit ("Anyone else would have broken both her arms"). Till slut är han dock fortfarande emotionellt fast i henne, men utan någon synbar ansats till självrannsakan, annat än en brännande sorg och omogna skuldkänslor som kanske i kombination kommer att bli hans egen död? Men det vet vi inget om, för där slutar skivan.

Och här upphör Berlindelen av konserten, och publiken är hänförd. Alla reser sig upp och ger stående ovationer. De som sitter runt mig lämnar av någon anledning nu lokalen och missar därmed tre extranummer.

Vi har nu kommit till en slutpunkt som i en grekisk tragedi, och som goda européer så finner vi oss i det. Men Lou Reed är amerikan och vill ge oss ett lyckligare slut på kvällen och bandet framför "Satellite of Love". Som allra sista låt sjunger en äldre Lou Reed, om att han bara har sitt hjärta att erbjuda (en kontrast till den omogne mannen som skildras i Berlin), könsrollerna är närmast omvända där objektet för hans åtrå är mer rationell än han själv. Lou Reed slutar med att tacka alla i bandet och alla i produktionen, och slutligen tackar en ödmjuk och lycklig Lou Reed oss i publiken för att vi finns. Ja faktiskt, han gör det.
