Fick ett samtal idag från ett företag som jag glömt namnet på. Någonting i stil med "Hej jag heter NN från xx i samarbete med Fortum".

Nix-registret  hjälper inte mot företag som man har en affärsrelation med, som t ex ens elleverantör, telefonileverantör, osv. Dessa företag kan då sälja partnerskap till andra företag, som då kan ringa och på så sätt kringgå NIX-reglerna. Jag tror att det är det som har hänt i detta fall.

Om det föreligger ett etablerat kundförhållande (ingånget avtal) mellan en marknadsförare och en privatperson strider det inte mot god marknadsföringssed att ringa personen för att lämna erbjudanden om samma typ av varor eller tjänster, inte ens om personens telefonnummer finns i NIX-Telefon. Ett kundförhållande enligt ovan skall anses bestå även en tid efter det att avtalsförpliktelserna fullgjorts,[...]

En enkel lösning på detta är att alla har betalnummer, och att man bestämmer i efterhand om man ska avstå kostnaden för samtalet (vilket man gör om det är kompisar t ex), eller om man ska debitera det. För riktigt jobbiga försäljare kan man ju ha ett extra dyrt nummer, där debiteringen motsvarar lidandet.

Volvo S80 klarade sig bäst i ett amerikanskt kraschtest av stora bilar. Här finns en video där man kan se hur den och andra bilar klarade en sidokrock från ett stort SUV-liknade fordon.

Forskning om undervattenskommunikation hade från början militära syften. Idag finns flera drivkrafter. Nu gäller trådlösa förbindelser i vattnet även i civila tillämpningar. – Inom forskningsprojekt som sponsras av EU byggs en infrastruktur av sensorer upp på havets botten, förklarar Erland Sangfelt, undervattensexpert på FOI. Man vill övervaka miljöförändringar i havet, få förvarning om jordskalv, följa undervattensvädret och inte minst leta efter olja och gas. För sådana forskningsstationer har trådlös undervattenskommunikation en viktig roll.

In 1962, then-King Faisal abolished slavery in Saudi Arabia by royal decree. Over forty years later, migrant workers in the purportedly modern society that the kingdom has become continue to suffer extreme forms of labor exploitation that sometimes rise to slavery-like conditions. Their lives are further complicated by deeply rooted gender, religious, and racial discrimination. This provides the foundation for prejudicial public policy and government regulations, shameful practices of private employers, and unfair legal proceedings that yield judicial sentences of the death penalty. The overwhelming majority of the men and women who face these realities in Saudi Arabia are low-paid workers from Asia, Africa, and countries in the Middle East. This report gives voice to some of their stories.

Quite bizarrely, not only do these helical strands interact in a counterintuitive way in which like can attract like, but they also undergo changes that are normally associated with biological molecules, such as DNA and proteins, say the researchers. They can, for instance, divide, or bifurcate, to form two copies of the original structure. These new structures can also interact to induce changes in their neighbours and they can even evolve into yet more structures as less stable ones break down, leaving behind only the fittest structures in the plasma.

So, could helical clusters formed from interstellar dust be somehow alive? "These complex, self-organized plasma structures exhibit all the necessary properties to qualify them as candidates for inorganic living matter," says Tsytovich, "they are autonomous, they reproduce and they evolve".

He adds that the plasma conditions needed to form these helical structures are common in outer space. However, plasmas can also form under more down to earth conditions such as the point of a lightning strike. The researchers hint that perhaps an inorganic form of life emerged on the primordial earth, which then acted as the template for the more familiar organic molecules we know today.

It is popular today to speculate that we live in a computer simulation. There are at least two problems with this theory:

1) We have no idea if computers can ever be as powerful as to do this simulation. In effect, we already today have big problems getting complex systems to work. Mac OS X was preceded by botched attempts by Apple to create a new operating system from scratch. Windows NT (and its descendants 2000 and XP and Vista) was created by hiring Dave Cutler et consortes who made Vax/VMS. Just extrapolating the curves may well be naïve.

2) If we indeed are simulated, than why specifically by a computer? We know that our current computer systems have problems "evolving" into more meaningful complexity. Why not by something completely different? If we agree that there are different kinds of simulations than by a computer, maybe there are more of these other kinds of simulations? Maybe they vastly outnumber computer simulations? In that case we can just state "We live in something that is guided by something", which is getting close to standard physics. Maybe there aren't turtles all the way down?

I en intervju med en av grundarna till Apple, Steve Wozniak, så berättar han om ett träslag som heter Southern Yellow Pine, som har den egenskapen att dess kåda går från fast till flytande vid en behaglig rumstemperatur. Det intressanta är att kåda, precis som vatten, kräver en massa energi för att byta fas till flytande.

Det innebär att materialet ka ta upp värmeenergi utan att tappa temperaturen, precis som nollgradig is. Den kan också avge mycket energi utan att tappa temperaturen, precis som nollgradigt vatten. Wozniak menar att detta är en elegant byggsten i ett energieffektivt hus. Woz är mycket för att göra så rena, enkla lösningar som möjligt, vare sig det gäller hus eller hårdvara.

You build a home out of a type of wood that keeps the temperature constant without air conditioning or heaters. The miracle wood in this category is Southern Yellow Pine. As for renewable resources, more Southern Yellow Pine trees are planted each year than are used. I'm told this is the only tree with this benefit. The Southern Yellow Pine has a resin inside that melts and freezes at 71 degrees F., a very comfortable temperature for humans. The chemical actions of melting and freezing work to balance the temperature. If it's a hot day, some small amount of the resin melts (it takes a huge amount of energy to melt a tiny amount) and the melting process pulls heat from the surroundings, from the home. When it gets colder at night, the resin-wood emits heat as it freezes.

Microsoft and Google are hoping this will lead people to seek more control over their own health records, using tools the companies will provide. Neither company will discuss their plans in detail. But Microsoft’s consumer-oriented effort is scheduled to be announced this fall, while Google’s has been delayed and will probably not be introduced until next year, according to people who have been briefed on the companies’ plans.

The scientists found that if they increase the body’s ability to soak up amyloid, the brain responds, causing levels of the substance in the brain – the real target – to plummet. “There is a dynamic equilibrium between the levels of amyloid-beta in the blood and in the brain,” said neuroscientist Berislav Zlokovic, M.D., Ph.D., the leader of the team. “If we are able to lower the levels of amyloid-beta circulating in blood by sequestering more of it there, then the brain should follow and lower its levels too. This is exactly what we found.”

Den Nya Zeeländska komedi-folkduon har ju fått sin egen TV-serie, och jag har nu sett de 8 första avsnitten av denna (av vad som totalt ska bli 12). Omdöme: Det är mycket bra och mycket roligt.

Serien handlar om ett antal personer i New York. I första hand Bret och Jemain som just flyttat dit för att försöka slå igenom som band. De har en manager, också från Nya Zeeland, som jobbar som vice kulturattaché på det Nya Zeeländska konsulatet i New York. På ett sätt finns det vissa likheter med TV-serien Seinfeld, det är små detaljer i hur folk beter sig som är roliga. I varje avsnitt brister det ut i sång när Bret och Jemain gör något av sina nummer som de f ö byggt upp när de turnerat runt tidigare. Dessa nummer finns i originalform ofta tillgängliga på Youtube.

Musiknumren är ofta spoofar på någon känd artist såsom Barry White, Prince, David Bowie eller Pet Shop boys.

Avsnitten har en en mycket bra tonträff i dialogen och en härlig självdistans. De håller för att ses om (dock inte hur många gånger som hels)t. Påfallande många av skådespelarna i serien, såsom Brets och Jemains kompis Dave, deras manager Murray , deras fan Mel och deras hyresvärd Eugene är själva stå-upp-komiker, och de visar sig fungera allldeles utmärkt som skådespelare, med en perfekt leverans av repliker.

Till sist så är det Jemain som själ showen. Den mannen strålar ut talang och närvaro (när han inte bara spelar sur nörd iofs).

Förutom material från deras turnéer med gitarrer inför publik, ligger också många av de videos av deras sånger som gjorts för tv-serien uppe på Youtube. Det är svårt att veta vad man ska rekommendera, så mycket är bra. Men varför inte it's business time:

Lockheed Martin is paying back the Pentagon about five years worth of F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) award fees totaling $265 million the company erroneously charged because of a computer glitch in its billing system, company spokesman Thomas Jurkowsky told Aviation Week's Michael Fabey today.
