Enligt publikationen The Croissant så har en stor operation med inflygning av trupper och materiel skett från Iran till Syrien, i syfte att ta över Libanon. All flygtrafik ska ha stängts av förra veckan, från tisdag-torsdag för att sex flygplan ostört (i skytteltrafik) skulle kunna transportera trupper och materiel till Syrien.

Man tycker ändå att underrättelsetjänster världen över måste ha noterat detta? Vore bra att få mer källor på detta.

According to Syrian sources, passengers flying out of Damascus airport from last Tuesday to Thursday were sent home by authorities because of an alleged general breakdown. The cancellation of all the flights was rather due to the fact that a massive airlift between Tehran and Damascus was under way and needed to proceed with the utmost discretion. Six planes flew round the clock between the two capitals to bring in weapons and Revolutionary Guards to the Syrian capital. These men and weapons are going to be sent to Lebanon to help Hezbollah prepare for another war.

Det verkar finnas ett gäng med buggar i Intels nya Core2-serie. OpenBSD-gurun Theo de Raadt skriver följande:

At this time, I cannot recommend purchase of any machines based on the Intel Core 2 until these issues are dealt with (which I suspect will take more than a year). Intel must be come more transparent.

Some of these bugs are along the lines of "buffer overflow"; where

Others are floating point instruction non-coherencies, or memory
corruptions -- outside of the range of permitted writing for the

Och dessutom:

As I said before, hiding in this list are 20-30 bugs that cannot be
worked around by operating systems, and will be potentially
exploitable. I would bet a lot of money that at least 2-3 of them

Med andra ord, finns det misstankar om att processorerna inte är säkra. Förutom instabilitet i systemen kan de då också "hackas". Och man vet inte idag hur mycket som inte ens är upptäckt vad gäller fel.

Ett speciellt problem för Open Source kan vara att få tillgång till patchar.

Det är för mig lite oklart vilka modeller som avses. Möjligt är att det är alla, eller att man inte riktigt vet än.

Anledningen till denna något anmärkningsvärda ståndpunkt är att de stora inkomsterna från globaliseringen det senaste decenniet, i stor utsträckning inte kommit mannen på gatan till del. Detta kan leda till ett politiskt missnöje, menar Financial Services Forum. Och man vill sprida frukterna på ett sådant sätt att en majoritet stödjer frihandel.

Detta vill man åstadkomma med en mängd åtgärder där vissa,men inte alls alla är "vänster".

Man vill ha mer progressivitet i skatterna, bättre fungerande arbetslöshetsförsäkring och avdragsmöjligheter för utbildning t ex.

Man vill också bli av med överproduktion och bidrag till jordbruksprodukter genom att ge bidrag utan motprestation (inte odla alfalfa någon?)

Anledningen til att Vermont används som exempel är att det är få stater som håller koll på dessa utlägg. Vore intressant att se siffror för Sverige och Europa.

Det får väl snabbt påpekas här, att Hans Rosling, professor och mannnen bakom gapminder.org, ser mänskliga rättigheter som det viktigaste målet (tillsammans med kultur), men menar att ekonomisk utveckling är den effektivaste vägen att nå dit!

For starters, evo-devo researchers are finding that the evolution of complex new forms, rather than requiring many new mutations or many new genes as had long been thought, can instead be accomplished by a much simpler process requiring no more than tweaks to already existing genes and developmental plans. Stranger still, researchers are finding that the genes that can be tweaked to create new shapes and body parts are surprisingly few.

Gheorghe and Vamanu have carried out an analysis of just how easy it could be to knock out strategic satellites, their findings suggest that dozens of systems on which military and civilian activities depend make near-space a vulnerable environment. The team used a so-called "mathematical game" and textbook physics equations for ballistics to help them build a computer model to demonstrate that anti-satellite weaponry is a real possibility.

Det blossade upp en lite diskussion häromdagen på bloggen om fri vilja, apropå det jag skrev om en artikel i The Economist. Nu var det ju inte fri vilja jag ville diskutera primärt, utan om vidare upptäckter om hjärnan, skulle visa att kriminella inte kan hjälpa sina handlingar. Steven Pinker har tydligen sagt nedanstående:

Harvard’s Pinker figures that we can simultaneously believe in a fully caused human being and an ethical system that holds people responsible for their actions by imagining ethics as a “game” that it is useful for us to play for social purposes. In How the Mind Works, he writes that “the ethics game treats people as equivalent, sentient, rational, free-willed agents, and its rules are the calculus that assigns moral value to behavior through the behavior’s inherent nature or its consequences. Free will is an idealization of human beings that makes the ethics game playable.” The results of that game, he concludes, “can be sound and useful even though the world, as seen by science, does not really have uncaused events.”

Och det är väl ett rimligt sätt att se det på, om man skulle nå fram till att förstå hjärnan så grundligt. Fast jag tror inte man når dit.

Det har varit en del debatt om man ska ge högre lön av"rättviseskäl" till lågavlönade arbetare i tredje världen. Det ingår som en del i rättvisemärkning. Någon i bloggosfären (kan inte hitta det nu)  konstaterade nyligen att det håller fast människor i lågavlönade branscher. Ett argument jag brukar använda är att om man höjer lönerna kommer arbetarna att ersättas av robotar. Och då blir de ju helt arbetslösa om de inte har några alternativ. Här en artikel i Wired om just detta senare:

As if the debate over immigration and guest worker programs wasn't complicated enough, now a couple of robots are rolling into the middle of it. Vision Robotics, a San Diego company, is working on a pair of robots that would trundle through orchards plucking oranges, apples or other fruit from the trees. In a few years, troops of these machines could perform the tedious and labor-intensive task of fruit picking that currently employs thousands of migrant workers each season.

IQ som mått på eller indikator för framgång är ett mycket minerat område att diskutera. Ekonomen Garett Jones har nu gjort ett antal studier som visar en tydlig korrelation mellan IQ och ekonomisk framgång för en population.

Vi får nog räkna med en hetsig debatt framöver om detta,både vad gäller att IQ i sig är ett dåligt mått, och att IQ kan förklaras med miljöfaktorer av olika slag, såsom skolgång, nutrition och kultur. Vissa fysiska storheter, som t ex kroppslängd, verkar kunna påverkas över generationer på något skumt sätt.

“In growth regressions that include only robust control variables, IQ is statistically significant in 99.8% of these 1330 regressions, and the IQ coefficient is always positive. A strong relationship persists even when OECD countries are excluded from the sample. A 1 point increase in a nation’s average IQ is associated with a persistent 0.11% annual increase in GDP per capita.”

Glad midsommarafton på er. Tänkte posta det här om att Dick Cheney inte vill ha sitt kontor utvärderat vad gäller hantering av hemliga dokument. Han anför som försvar att att vicepresidenten inte tillhör den exekutiva makten utan den lagstiftande och därför inte berörs av presidentens granskningsdirektiv. Han har en poäng om man ser på konstitutionen.  Det konstiga är dock att han börjat vägra på senare år, och tidigare tillåtet granskning! Så det osar katt. Några postare på fark har gjort roliga bilder:

J. William Leonard, director of the oversight office, has argued in a series of letters to Addington that the vice president's office is indeed such an entity. He noted that previous vice presidents had complied with the request for data on documents classified and declassified, and that Cheney did so in 2001 and 2002. But starting in 2003, the vice president's office began refusing to supply the information. In 2004, it blocked an on-site inspection by Leonard's office that was routinely carried out across the government to check whether documents were being properly labeled and safely stored.

TA-CD, the cocaine vaccine, works through a series of injections over a three-month period. Study participants began to respond favorably to the vaccine after about a month. TA-CD has one more large scale human study scheduled before it is ready for the FDA approval process. “The vaccine slowly decreases the amount of cocaine that reaches the brain,” Kosten said. “It’s a slow process, and patients do not go through any significant withdrawal symptoms.”

Det här kan bara gå åt helvete. Snubbarna bakom piratebay har gjort en tjänst, bayimg, där vem som helst kan ladda upp vilka bilder som helst. Där finns material från t ex himmelska fridens torg.

Men, den här kommer ju också att användas till annat. Det kommer att hagla förtalsmål, osv mot dem. De tar bara emot bilder som är lagliga, skriver de, men det kommer att krävas omöjliga resurser för att hålla efter det.

Fast det är klart, de kanske försöker hitta en nisch (nisch och nisch) som dem som visar allt som är lagligt. Många andra sajter har ju extra krav.

Det är väl bara att ta fram popcornen, luta sig tillbaka och bevittna fyrverkeriet.
