Enligt The Guardian anser sig nu brittisk polis ha nog på fötterna för att den brittiska regeringen ska begära Andrei Lugovoi utlämnad från Ryssland. Det är dock tveksamt om Ryssland tänker efterfölja denna begäran, om och när den kommer.  Lugovoi har lämnat ett spår av Polonium efter sig varhelst han varit, och är såvitt jag förstår den ende som konsekvent gjort detta. Lugovoi själv förnekar inblandning och pekar på att även hans fru och barn kontaminerats, vilket ha menar att han inte skulle gjort med vetskap. Det senare kan ju i och för sig tyda snarare på att han inte klarat av att sanera sig själv ordentligt.

Mr Lugovoi met Mr Litvinenko at the Millennium Hotel in Grosvenor Square, London, on November 1. Mr Litvinenko fell ill shortly afterwards and died in University College Hospital, London, on November 23. In the intervening period, Mr Lugovoi appeared to leave a trail of radioactive polonium-210 at a number of offices and hotels around London, and traces of the substance were also found on board an aircraft in which he travelled.

Vi minns väl alla testningen på människor i England som gick tokfel, med livshotande tillstånd som följd.
Det verkar som om En hypotes är att man inte tagit i beräkningarna att medicinen skulle trigga minnet i erfarna T-lymfocyter. De djur man testat på hade förvarats tämligen sterilt och hade därför inte dessa erfarna T-celler.

Around 50% of adult human T cells are memory cells, having been activated by infections and illnesses during the course of a person's life. However, animal models, such as those used to test TGN1412 before tests were carried out on humans, do not have many memory T cells because they are deliberately kept in a sterile environment where they are shielded from infections.

Uppdatering 2007-01-26: Bloggposten mjukgjord efter kommentar från Erika.

En ny sajt om Carl von Linné har släppts idag av Svenska Institutet. Sajten är tänkt att presentera svensk forskning och att presentera "svenska" värderingar som man menar också Linné stod för: Öppenhet, bl a, vilket demonstreras av att man kan lägga kommentarer direkt på sidorna. Modigt och det ska bli intressant att se vad som händer.

Sajten börjar med en Flash-animation som täcker hela webbläsarfönstret utan några HTML-länkar. Inte bra, jag hoppas att det är tillfälligt för under presentationen av sajten på Svenska Institutet gjordes det klart att man inte skulle behöva flash för att använda sajten. Varje gång man går till Home så börjar sajten spela upp en trudelutt och visa flashen. Detta bör åtgärdas ASAP.

Ros
Annars verkar webbsajten mycket matig. En uppsjö av nyckelord finns i vänsterspalt vilket gör att man får en känsla av ett stort djup i sajten av närmast Wikipedia-proportioner.

I högerspalt kan man använda social bookmarks, rösta om saker, med mera.

Varje vecka diskuteras en speciell fråga. Texterna som gör detta är mycket välskrivna på en lagom initierat populärvetenskaplig nivå. Det känns om att bläddra i de bättre artiklarna i en bättre flyg-tidning, en sådan där som sitter i stolsryggen. Och jag vill påpeka att detta är menat som beröm, för det finns en del väldigt välskrivet ibland i dessa tidningar.

En del saker behöver dock förbättras, startsidan har nämnts ovan.
Varje fråga har en stor flashanimation ovanför texten, och åtminstone på den här sidan är det svårt att läsa texten under den, därför att flashanimationen är:

• Byter snabbt mellan häftiga kontraster

Kort sagt den är som en gammal irriterande banner ad. Tyvärr innebär det att den så kraftigt stimulerar ögats reflexer att titta upp och se vad det är som rör sig, att det blir mycket svårt att läsa texten under. Detta bör åtgärdas, och gäller även de mindre animationerna, om än då i motsvarande mindre grad. Tona ner animationen till ett minimum eller låt den loopa endast en gång per besök, och loopa kort. Helst ta bort dem helt.

Sammanfattning
Jag är positivt överraskad. Eftersom jag undervisar i informationsarkitektur sedan åtta år och funderat en del på de här sakerna är jag glad att man tagit en hel del bra beslut. Stor orsak till detta är att man inte bara har funderat på presentation, utan sett till att det finns ett bra innehåll, att det finns form för innehållet (en fråga i veckan som släpps på fredagen lagom för diskussion med vänner på helgen).

Fixa flashprylarna så blir det en stor förbättring. Ja, och ha helst inte text satt i grått (ger dålig kontrast).

Idag var det release på  Svenska Institutet  av webbsajten linnaeus300.com. Man presenterade idéerna bakom sajten, som verkade vara väldigt sunda (Se min recension av sajten).

Här en bild på en panel som diskuterade, från vänster Jonas Söderström med bloggen Blind Höna,  Joanna Rose från Forskning och Framsteg, Maria Strömme (professor i nanoteknologi) och Johan Eriksson (professor i medicin på Karolinska Institutet). Johan Eriksson liknade det vetenskapliga samarbetet globalt vid ett framrusande lokomotiv, och jag ger honom gärna rätt, det är fantastiskt vilken kunskapsutveckling vi har, utan motstycke i historien.

The paper by researchers at Yale, the University of Winnipeg, Stony Brook University, and led by University of Florida paleontologist Jonathan Bloch reconstructs the base of the primate family tree by comparing skeletal and fossil specimens representing more than 85 modern and extinct species. A comprehensive new MIT-led study of the potential for geothermal energy within the United States has found that mining the huge amounts of heat that reside as stored thermal energy in the Earth's hard rock crust could supply a substantial portion of the electricity the United States will need in the future, probably at competitive prices and with minimal environmental impact. An 18-member panel led by MIT prepared the 400-plus page study, titled "The Future of Geothermal Energy." Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, it is the first study in some 30 years to take a new look at geothermal, an energy resource that has been largely ignored.

University of South Florida researchers report that a novel needle-free vaccine approach is effective and safe in clearing brain-damaging plaques from a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease. En del av det de kallar myter har en del sanning bakom sig, t ex coriolis-effekten och att gäspningar smittar.

Analysis of the Development, Production and Operating costs suggests that the average ticket price would be comparable to an existing Business class ticket. Therefore in principle the A2 vehicle could capture all of the current business and first class traffic due to the greatly reduced journey time of 4.6 hours compared to the current 22 hours. This estimate assumes hydrogen fuel derived from water electrolysis whereas the ticket price would roughly halve if the hydrogen is produced by steam reforming. Also the analysis assumes no hydrogen subsidy, however in reality it is likely that the first generation of hydrogen fuelled aircraft would be subsidised to promote the switch to a more environmentally friendly fuel.

This is another of the consequences of widespread pleiotropy -- genes that have important effects early in development may continue to be important in restricted tissues later in life. By being scored in a functional category related to these later functions, the earlier functions of the gene may be missed in the functional analysis. Screening gene expression at multiple times helps to catch these temporally sensitive functions.
