Men brevet finns. Det är daterat i Stockholm samma dag som hemsidan stängdes. Underlaget till brevet sändes bland annat till den svenska ambassaden i Riyadh. Upptryckt på ambassadens brevpapper sänds det med ett följebrev till Jemens utrikesminister den 11 februari. Freivalds tar i brevet kraftfullt avstånd från publiceringen. Hon ber å Sveriges vägnar om ursäkt för att det finns extremistiska grupper som utnyttjar yttrandefriheten för att såra och skada andra. Hon förklarar också att hon alltid och under alla omständigheter kommer att försvara yttrandefriheten, utom i det här fallet, "from this manifestation I disassociate myself" skriver utrikesministern.

I ett samtal med några kompisar för några månader sedan reflekterade jag över att islamism egentligen först blir farlig när den ändrar sina traditionella värderingar på ett sådant sätt att den väver in vetenskap och teknologi. Man får då en farlig hybrid, som kan riskera att utvecklas på samma sätt som de teknik- och vetenskapsdyrkande totalitära ideologierna kommunismen och nazismen. Teknik ger makt. Nu verkar det ju vara just något sådant som man med nuvarande ledare försöker skapa i Iran, vilket nämns närmast i förbigående i sista stycket i en artikel i The Economist:

The fact that America took out Iran's two biggest local enemies, Saddam Hussein and the Taliban, has emboldened its regime's pursuit of what Mr Pardo calls a “new religion”—neither truly Shia nor Sunni, but a syncretic, millenarian cult. Its followers, including Mr Ahmadinejad, believe in the imminent return of the Mahdi (the Shias' “hidden” imam, who vanished more than a thousand years ago), worship high technology (ie, nuclear weapons) and want Iran to become the leader of a pan-Islamic regime in the region—before tussling with the Western world, including Israel.

That's how D.C. works. Many of the people making decisions have been in and out of the same set of revolving doors connecting government, conservative think tanks, lobbying firms, law firms and the defense industry. So strong is the bond between lobbyists, defense contractors and the Pentagon that it is known in Washington as "the iron triangle." And this triangle inevitably gets what it wants. Why? Because in the revolving door system, a defense contractor executive can surface as an official in the Department of Defense, from which position he can give lucrative contracts to his former employer, and his prospects for an even better paying job in the private sector brighten. Former aides to members of congress become handsomely paid lobbyists for the companies they were able to help in their position on Capitol Hill. Such lobbyists can spread their corporate-funded largesse to the friendliest members and their aides on the Hill. And so on.

Bush couldn't go into Iraq without a major ally and Lockheed knew it. To sweeten the pot for Blair, Lockheed dragged BAE Systems into the F-35 deal. When BAE still struggled prior to the war (Goldman Sachs reported that BAE would have to cut its dividend), Lockheed began renegotiating the contract -- with the new version unveiled in 2005, giving BAE billions more to be paid "as needed." This put BAE back on its feet, able to build the Typhoon jet fighter for sale to Saudi Arabia in a $70 billion deal, saving 10,000 BAE jobs and 4,000 Rolls-Royce jet engine building jobs.

På Discovery såg jag ett program om flygplanet Europa. Killen som konstruerat hade ett antal krav som inte tillgodosågs av hans kompis plan av typen Long-EZ (En av legendaren Burt Rutans konstrutioner). Europa är ett plan som:

• Man kan sitta två i, bredvid varandra (Long-EZ har tandemsitsar bakom varandra)
• Inte behöver en hangar, utan kan packas ihop på en trailer bakom bilen (Long-Ez kräver hangar).
• Kan starta och landa på åkrar (Long-EZ kräver lång slät bana, typ asfalt eller betong)
• Stabilt
• Snabbt (Europa har en marschfart över 300 km/h, med den starka motorn)
• Bränslesnålt (0,6 liter milen under gynnsamma omständigheter)

Enligt Johan Åkerman, forskningsledare vid Avdelningen för miljöstrategisk analys vid KTH, så är flyget i stora stycken miljövänligare för att ta sig till Gotland än en snabbfärja. Det kostar på att accelerera och vidmakthålla hög hastighet med 20 ton snabbfärja per passagerare.

Även om färjorna har katalytisk avgasrening och körs med lågsvavlig bunkerolja är utsläppen av växthusgaser (som påverkar växthuseffekten) cirka 50 procent högre per passagerare, jämfört med flyget. Även utsläppen av kväveoxider (som påverkar försurning och övergödning i Östersjön) är högre.

Ett amerikanskt och ett brittiskt projekt är igång som båda bygger på att robotar sprutar ut byggnadsmaterial, och rör sig över tomten, på samma sätt som en bläckstråleskrivare skriver ut på en sida.

Detta gör att man kan bygga i mycket mer kreativa, t ex organiska former, och att man kan ta ner både byggtid och byggkostnad drastiskt. I det ena fallet använder man en gips och betong. I det brittiska projektet, som inte ligger lika nära realisering, "skriver" man också ut rördragning.

Enligt en kanadensisk undersökning med 200 deltagare tycks tvåspråkighet vara en faktor som försenar demens med fyra år.

They found that the patients seemed to be at similar stages of cognitive dysfunction, but they could be divided into two groups, one of which showed a much later onset (over four years later) for the cognitive problems. So what did that group have that the other one lacked–did they get more exercise, eat a different diet, or work the New York Times crossword puzzle every day? Nope–they were bilingual.

To test this idea, a team led by Antônio Pavão and Gerson Paiva from the Federal University of Pernambuco in Brazil took wafers of silicon just 350 micrometres thick, placed them between two electrodes and zapped them with currents of up to 140 amps. Then over a couple of seconds, they moved the electrodes slightly apart, creating an electrical arc that vaporised the silicon.

The arc spat out glowing fragments of silicon but also, sometimes, luminous orbs the size of ping-pong balls that persisted for up to 8 seconds.

Tradesports har ett annorlunda sätt att göra vadslagning, som jag tycker är rätt sympatiskt. Istället för att använda sig av odds så köper man ett slags "värdepapper",  vars värde fluktuerar med avseende på hur sannolikt andra "investerare" anser det är att utfallet i vadslagningen blir så som ens värdepapper säger. Man kan alltså sälja en vadslagning vid valfri tidpunkt innan vadet går igenom.

Ett exempel: Anta att man tror Giuiliani blir nominerad till republikanernas presidentkandidat. Då kan man köpa ett värdepapper som satsar på detta utfall. Om vid en senare tidpunkt fler tror på Giuliani, så kommer värdet att öka. Om man då t ex själv tror mindre på det än den allmänna opinionen kan man sälja det innan det börjar minska i värde.

STOCKHOLM: Nyamko Sabuni would stand out anyway, being tiny, dark-skinned and obviously foreign in a place where those things are still anomalies. But as the recently appointed minister for integration and gender equality, she tends to draw more attention for her unusually blunt pronouncements about the place of immigrants in Swedish society.

In Europe, Ireland is the country most at risk of a property crash because of "the effect of rising interest rates in a flexible mortgage system," said Just, the Deutsche Bank analyst. Spain is next, he said, because it faces "contagion risk" from drops in other economies, like Britain; foreign purchasers of second homes have fueled much of the Spanish property boom. Infrared synchrotron radiation at Brookhaven National Laboratory was used to discover the diamonds' source. "Trace elements critical to an 'ET' origin are nitrogen and hydrogen," said Haggerty. The presence of hydrogen in the carbonado diamonds indicates an origin in a hydrogen-rich interstellar space, he and colleagues believe.
